Default 1965-389 correct oil dip stick

I have a 65 GTO 389 WITH AC. Can any one tell me were the dip stick tube should mount. Is it to the valve cover behind the compressor or to a bracket on the front of the head? I have the tube in the block but am missing the upper most piece. Is it higher then the valve cover? Any pics would be helpful. Thanks

I am not sure about the GTO's but for a 65 tempest with a 326 the dipstick tube mounts on the valve cover bolt and sticks up over the valve cover. I would sort of think the setup would be the same for the 389. The pic is when we bought the car, we are in the process of redoing it now. Hope the info helps some, or maybe someone with a GTO will chime in with the right answer.

Default position of oil dipstick

Phil,
I have a 65 GTO 389 and it's in the same place as the 326.
Best of luck with the restoration.

A factory air car takes a long dipstick than the one pictured. (The one pictured has dealer add on air) I haven't seen one in a few years and am not sure exactly how it mounts, but it is different!

The dipstick extension tube has a tab on it that is secures it to a hole drilled in the top of the upper compressor bracket with a self tapping sheet metal bolt ( approx 1/4") that also has a star washer and the ground wire for the A/C compressor also attaches there. A/C cars also use a longer dipstick than non A/C cars because of the added length of the extra upper tube extension. So if you don't have the extra tube you need that and the longer A/C dipstick to make it correct. With the A/C compressor in place it's impossible to check the oil as you can't reach the dipstick handle of a non A/C unit. I don't have a picture, this is just from memory of working on many Pontiacs through the years, hope it may be of some help to you.
