My 69 FB has the OE 350 block with 73 heads from a 350 or 400? Anyway i changed the intake gasket and thats when i found out? because the middle ports on both sides are leaking.... I found some threads that said it can be fixed by useing the gasket from the 73 model and or using a block off plate? My question is? if I'm blocking those middle ports? I'm probably partially blocking some others too? i guess? I'm i losing power by doing this? This is a street car, a cruiser only. I don't race it, but do like to burn the tires from time to time
Or should i just invest in the right intake? and if i do, which one? Please help i want to get my car on the rode ASAP.... Thanks

If it is the heat cross over you are talking about? I run mine blocked. If you have a choke stove for the carb it can affect it but a cooler intake is best as far as I am concerned.

http://www.dapa.org/jhpages/jhand9.htm The 72 and later intake would help eliminate your problem or follow the instructions in the link. BTW a putty knife blade of SS material thin enough will work as a block off plate.

Thx for that, but there a quote on there ( the opening is there only to save weight and does not need to be sealed. )
Theres a lot of air coming out of that hole? Does that mean i can run my car like that?

No air comes from that opening. The hole leads to nowhere.

There is exhaust air coming out of those holes!!

There is exhaust coming out of the center ports but not the hole that Jim Hand mentions as the "weight saving hole. The only way exhaust should exit that hole is if you don't seal it as mentioned in the article I posted.

69 Redbird, what year intake are you using? A 69?
If so, it should not leak on the driver's side if you are using the early 65-71 (small crossover hole) gasket. I "fixed" the problem on one of my Tri-Power intakes (should be the same as a 69 Qjet intake in this area of the intake) by welding up part of the crossover port in the intake. I welded about a 1/4" to the top (inside) part of the crossover port on the passenger side of the intake. Welded it up and then filed back flush where in contacts the gasket. Use the small crossover port gaskets on both sides and it works great. No indication that the intake has been modified when it is installed on the engine. |
