Hello all,
I'm just about ready to begin painting my 69' Carousel Red Judge. I've spoke to many different bodyshops and no one can give me a straight answer. As I understand it each paint supplier produces a slightly different shade of colour when you ask them to mix up a sample of Carousel Red. I have also attached a paint chart 1969 PONTIAC COLOUR CHIPS.pdf which shows all the exterior colours for 1969 Pontiac Firebird. The top part reads RM (RINSHED-MASON PRODUCTS). Is this correct? Did GM use alternate paint suppliers too. I would appreciate anyone's help on this before I make a mistake on the wrong paint. Thanks, Sam |

I am quite sure G.M.(and others)used various paint mfrs, depending on plant location. And you are correct,if two paint companies make the same color, and use different pigments in the process,(or different batches of the same pigment)the paints probably will not match exactly. In addition, this was before the advent of color computers,so all paint matching(tinting)was done visually. And i will GUARANTEE you,if you are looking at a color chip from 1969,that color has drifted from original, maybe ever so slightly, maybe more, even if the color chip was kept away from all U.V. light exposure.Hope this info helps.

I have always used the Ditzler paint chip chart to start with. The 72 paint code was used on a lot of GM cars. Maybe the bowtie sites could help with this as well.
