Default Pulley problems

1966 389 with A/C and PS, totally stock, 8 bolt timing cover, 3 pulley 3 part balancer, 2 groove water pump pulley (9782679 XJ). Crank pulleys and water pump pulleys are quite misaligned, off by perhaps 3/8. It appears that the crank pulleys are too close to the engine relative to the water pump pulleys.

This engine was running when I got it and wasn't making any strange noises or throwing belts. I feel like I'm missing something very basic. Can anyone think of what it might be?

I've been down this road many times. Take all your measurements where all pulleys should be to achieve perfect alignment. If the crank pulley is the only one out of line, figure out what depth it should be and start looking. This site and Ebay are good sources. Good luck...

Ram Air restoration carries a nice selection of pulley sets.

Thanks for the responses. I saw those pulleys at ramair. They are very nice looking and I was planning to submit an order with them soon for some other things. Hmmm.

Nonetheless, I still don't understand what's happening. The problem can only be in two possible places. Not much variability possible in terms of the water pump. It would be a problem if I had the wrong pulley, but my research seems to indicate that I have the right wp pulley.

In terms of the crank pulley, I guess I should check the part number, but there's not much variability possible there either. The balancer slid onto the crank nicely and seated. Is there any way the balancer could be in too far? How could that be possible? There's no spacer that goes between the balancer and the timing gear - - at least, I'm pretty sure there isn't.

Still scratching my head.

No longer scratching. I finally got a chance to revisit this issue. I recently came across another 66 389 with properly aligned pulleys. Everything about the new engine matched my old one, except the water pump. Turns out that the water pump that was on the original engine when I got it is too long (i.e., the distance from the timing cover to the flange onto which the fan is bolted is too long) relative to the engine with properly aligned pulleys. I now have two questions.

(1) Is there more than one 8 bolt water pump design or do I just have one reject on my hands? (2) Does anyone know a part number (airtex, cardone, whatever) that is correct for a 66 389 with a/c & ps? Thanks.
