Default Console Lid

I bought a padded console lid, I assumed it was the most accurate repro available, but before I proceed, I wanted to get some opinions.

While it is very nice, the grain seems really deep compared to the original and especially the console itself. My original is worn and faded, but in the areas it isnt, looks more "right" next to the console. The original also appears to be vinyl, over padding, which I think would be easy enough to re-cover and dye.

I guess my question is what repro have you guys used, or if restored the original, how?

The reproduction appears to be a copy of the '73-81 lid. These had a molded rubber/vinyl cover with a more defined grain. The earlier lids were wrapped vinyl with a much smoother grain and sharper corners.

Overall it look like a very good reproduction and I doubt there will be a truly correct early console lid released anytime soon.

Mine is an early 73, which appears to be the wrapped vinyl style. Maybe I will just re-wrap it and see how it turns out.

I bought 3 before I found 1 that was "close". PY supplied an OK quality one, and Parts Place had the worst. I think if I had to do it over I would find an NOS one.

Re covering the early ones youll end up with the same "sharp edges" they had, as the corners are cut and folded in. I did one with my father who does upholstery and I was not impressed. .. Ill use the same as your repro soon too..
