I'm sure this has been covered before, but I searched and couldn't find an exact answer. I am installing a factory gauge cluster from an 86 Grand Prix in my 80 LeMans. It came with idiot lights. I know all I need to do to for the oil pressure and water temp gauges is change the sending units.
What I don't know is about hooking up the tach.....did the factory wiring harness include the tach plug? If not, how do I wire it from the harness plug that goes into the back of the tach/speedo unit? Do I need to put a filter on it (I have seen different opinions on this). Any insight anyone has would be appreciated. -Dave

I have a 79 gp that came with idiot lights. All I had to do was run a wire to the distributor tach hook up and that was all. HEI distributors all have the plug in for tachs.

The dash harness should be partially wired for a tach from the factory. There is a single terminal plug about under the steering column that the tach signal harness from the distributor plugs into. The firewall has a dimple near the throttle cable for drilling the grommet hole for the tach harness.
