Great Concerts
The AC/DC thread got me thinking about some of the great concerts I have gone to over the years. I figured I would throw this thread out for the fun of it. Most of my concert going was in the late 60s and throughout the 70s, but I have been to a few good ones in recent years.

ZZ Top is right up there for multiple great shows. Too many others to remember in the 80's.

I'll add one:
Best Show to pick up horny chicks: Poison (I forget which album) with Warrant (Cherry Pie Tour) as the opening act. I believe this was 1990 or 91. You had to be either dead or gay if you couldn't score at this concert.

Two recent and uncommon ones:
1) Lindsey Buckingham at the Tampa Theater. A guitar legend in a 900-person theater....wow! 2) Alan Parsons Project with a 30-piece orchestra behind him at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. The orchestra supporting Alan's music was amazing and powerful. Harvey

Grand Funk Shea Stadium 1980 or so Waylon Phoenix 1991 Allman Brothers Portland 2009 Allman Brothers NYC with Eric Clapton 4 songs 1991 Johnny Winter Portland 1982 Bonnie Raitt Phoenix 1972 Savoy Brown NYC 1972 Procol Harem NYC 1972 King Crimson NYC 1972 Jethro Tull NYC 1972 Stephen Stills NYC Graham Nash guest 1975 Impromptu show day after the big city show, at a saloon in the middle of the mountains in New Mexico: New Riders of The Purple Sage that one has stories  holy Christ I feel old now....I could go on... those are some of the ones that come to mind as really good.

In the 70's
J Geils twice in the Springfield Mass civic center. Rossington Collins band. This was the surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. They played a instrumental "Free Bird" with an empty microphone stand on stage and there wasn't a dry eye in the place.

One of the best was seeing "Bent Brother" - Twisted Sister last year got together with no makeup and just played all their amazing hits in a small club. They told stories about the songs, their history, etc. It was an amazing experience.

I saw Twisted Sister a long time ago. Got to talk to Dee Snyder and the rest of the band afterwards. Man...They did NOT like wearing the makeup one bit. Said it was their management's idea. They tore it up though. Queensryche opened for them.
Best concert I ever saw....Bachman Turner Overdrive. |

Have to say...
ZZTop in Dayton. Did first set with an old 50's car dashboard backdrop...all their old songs from Rio Grand Mud and their first few albums. Took a break and came out in front of a digital dashboard backdrop and did their later stuff {Legs, etc.} with the famous laser light show. WOW!!! All I can say. I'd be lying if I told you I remembered the year. Brains behind that performance was a genius. Saw them two weeks later and a totally different show.

Geez. Where to start? How about the beginning...
1969 Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Big Brother and the Holding Co. (now all "dead"), Led Zeppelin (1st time), Cream (MAYBE that was late 68...) all at The Swing Audtitorium, San Bernardino. I was 15 and didn't really appreciate what I was seeing. It was "cool" to go to concerts, though my big sisters didn't think it was cool I hung around... (:- Saw Led Zeppelin again in '72. First time we paid to see just ONE band... $5 and we thought that was high! GREAT show... Best EVER? No doubt. Wings Over America, '76. Anyone that never experienced "Beatle Mania" has never been to one of their concerts... He had magnetism and charisma unequalled by any other I saw! And it was also the first place I sw a LASER at a comcert, San Fancisco "Cow Palace". There are too many to remember... Jim |

I remarked upon entering the venue that I wondered how many current and former strippers were in attendance... Monsters of Rock in '88 at the Pontiac Silverdome was a great show even tho the acoustics were crap! My favorites lately were the Family Values Tour in 06/07, headlined by Korn. Stone Sour, Deftones, Hell Yeah, and Evanescence all were amazing acts. And of course, so was Korn. Crazy shows with lots of mayhem, moshing, and bonfires.

ZZ Top on the recycler tour
BOC in the 76 era with the laser show. Outlaws,same era.Seeing GG&HT go for 45 minutes.Seeing them again in the mid-80's and noticing they hadn't lost a note. Black & Blue Tour-1981 Sabbath in New Haven in 1979.I've never seen anyone command an audience like Ozzy. SRV-all the shows. Two years ago,Sabbath & Alice Cooper.Both sounded like the mid-70's. Blackmore's Rainbow.The guy is a loon but i haven't seen his equal. John Fogerty 10 years ago.possibly a religous experience. I had a friend who saw Hendrix.I asked him one night-what was it like.He said:"Imagine going to church and Jesus came out to say the mass". |

Louis Armstrong and his band in a little nightclub setting at the Jones Beach Marine Theater after the performance of the play Mardi Gras, when I was about 12 years old. Close enough for the sweat to fly off and hit me. My first live concert experience, Guy Lombardo's band also played. I have a playbill that I got autographed by Jerome Kern and I think the drummer of Lombardo's band. Had been on the dock by Lombardo's 44' mahogany boat a couple hours earlier, watching the mechanic tinker on the twin Chrysler 440s, and Mr Lombardo coming to talk to him while I was standing there. Good times.
Many great shows in my life since then, this still tops my list. |
