quick Weld wheel stud/lug question
I'm gathering opinions if anyone thinks it's OK to knock off the end of the lugs for my Weld wheels. I have 3" long studs on the strange axles and the lugs I have are closed at the end, not open. I just want to mill or use a cut off wheel and knock off the end of the lug so the stud will stick through. Just wondering if anyone has done this, or if there would be any problem doing this.
Thanks ahead of time, Ron M.

Hey Ron, on my mcgaurd lug nuts the ends just popped right off when tightening...no problem cutting off yours if needed.

I didn't think so, just want to get some opinions of some who have ran across it.
Thanks!

If you want you can by open lugs. I also cut my first set after going to longer studs. They will rust quicker is the only down fall.

Or,
Shorten the stud/replace them with shorter studs. That way you can run your existing lug nuts for a cleaner look. The rule is that the stud must extend into the hex part of the lugnut the same distance as the stud diameter. If some ne'er-do-well tech inspector gets his undies in a bunch, you can always spin a lugnut off to show that you are in compliance. I have never had that happen. |

Our road race techs like the open look so they can see the stud lengths without any work. You can drill and tap too.

Sometimes you find out things you were not expecting when you trim off the top caps. We had one set that only had 1/2" of thread and the remainder of the nut was hollow. Anyone here ever look all the way into your lugnuts to see how far the threads go? I have cut the tops off other sets and the threads did run all the way through.

I think I paid $1.49 a piece for the ones for the back of my car from a local tire and wheel shop. They are open ended. Just go order them and don't worry about it any longer. Its 15-20 bucks for something that will be right the first time!

True ,but doesn't weld rec only a certain size shank for their rims? Maybe just another money maker for them too? I know I need new washers as mine are grooved in pretty good ,but i don't see anywhere to just buy their washers ..

Yeah but if you look at Summit's website they give a tolerance range.... Diameter 0.679-0.687 in, Length of shank 1.300-1.380 in. That gives you a wide range of brands to choose from.

I ended up just sticking them in a couple "V" blocks in a vice at work and milling the ends off in a bridgeport. Took about 15-20 minutes. Problem solved. Lots of thread length in the ones that I got with the wheels. Made 6 passed and the wheels didn't fly off so I think I'm good!
Thanks for the help guys......I ended up running my best Saturday of 12.44 @ 108.1 with the 26" slicks. Hope to get out one more time with a carb spacer to see if I can get a little faster.
