Default Ram Air III Engine Availability

Friend has a 69 GTO purchased new by his father in 69. Has original RA 3 motor but no ram air induction. Closed scoops, etc. Was this available from factory this way? Rare? Thanks.

No, but 4spd non RA motors had the same head castings - #48.

What's the 2 letter code on the front of the block?

What makes you think it's a RAIII engine? Per Boss above, 48 heads came on manual tranny engine GTO, with WT code...

Haven't had a chance to talk with him due to my busy schedule. It has 48 heads, automatic trans (with long tail housing of all things too???). That's all I know at this time and it may be a few days before I talk to him again. Thanks.

Long tail housing on transmission signals large-car swap at some point. GTO were short tail housing transmissions. sounds like a std 350 HP 400 engine - nothing about which to be ashamed.

Yup, original four speed car. Original engine went away when his dad had it, but he kept the heads. Now a 461 E85 engine.
