The Honeycomb wheels on my '71 Formula "wobble" more than other wheels I've checked out. They just don't seem to turn as true as most. I bought 2 more Honeycombs from a local swap meet and when I got them home,they were not much better than the ones I had on the car. Is this the nature of the beast, or do I have 6 messed- up Honeycombs? Is there a stated acceptable tolerance for run-out on these wheels? And has anyone ever had any luck finding a shop that can true them up any (I know the plastic insert makes it tough to apply any heat to them) ? Thanks for any help.

They need to be balanced using the lug holes because the center hole in many of them is out of spec.

LOL, between painting, trim rings, center caps you have a good investment. Make sure there not bad rims to start by checking them out on a balancer.
You might have to call over a dozen shops to find the right one but dont be afraid to ask them for reference to the right location. Just explain your situation and maybe one of them can steer you in the right direction right away? LOL, Brew |

Actually, the local Midas Muffler shop had the right balancer with the lug adapters. My mechanic buddy was friends with the guys there and they let us use it.

Thanks for the info on the Honeycombs...so, like in the yellow brick road movie,now "I'm off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of..." whatever...just hoping someone around here has that balancer machine gizmo you told me about...hopefully this story has a happy ending...I really don't need four more boat anchors taking up space around my garage...

I've came across several honeycomb wheels that were slightly bent and would "wobble" quite a bit when put on a balancing machine or mounted on a car. For some reason there seems to be a lot of bent honeycombs out there. Very seldom do I run into bent Rally II's.

Sounds like the 'wobble' is due to the center hub being bent/out of round? An optical illusion caused by the center hub not being round? Or are the wheels actually bent? When I bought a set of used honeys from a friend to put on my old SD, not one of them had a truly round center hub. Have another friend who has a exhaust pipe expander. Used that to carefully true up the center hub to that they were again truly round. After restoring them and mounting them, they balanced fine mounting them on a spin balancer with a cone adapter. Never tried to balance them before rerounding out the center hub, but it seems odd that a guy would have 6 out of 6 with 'wobble', and I had 4 out of 4 that balanced fine. Maybe I'm wrong and it has nothing to do with the bent or wobbly rims that you guys are seeing. Either way, here's a pointer for when you have honeys with out of round center hubs.....

Happy Thanksgiving out there! So here's the happy ending to my wobbly Honeycomb wheels...A little history to explain my predicament...When I bought this car years ago from a buddy, he had just put new tires on the wheels. The tire shop said that the spare was out of tolerance, but that the remaining 4 wheels were within spec. I didn't question this, or check the wheels at that time. I drove the car only once before I tore it all down, and noticed that there was a vibration between 60-65 mph. The car was a jig saw puzzle for many years before I finally put it all back together, and I just put the wheels back on the car (after sprucing them up some). On my first drive, I noticed the vibration I had forgotten about, and then I checked the wheels. They all seemed to "wobble" too much. In measuring the wheels I found them to be between 80 and 110 thousands out. My factory manual calls for 45 thousands maximum run out. I found a wheel shop that has dealt with Honeycombs. He checked mine out and found pretty much the same out of tolerance numbers (he had them actually a little worse than I had measured them). The guy said that a lot of Honeycomb wheels are messed up because they are sensitive to being over torqued. Since heating them could not be done, he told me they had pretty good success rates on putting the wheels on a lathe and back-cutting the contact area adjacent to the lug holes. I was skeptical, but gave the go ahead. Short story...all wheels are now between 25 and 30 thousands run out, and the vibration is gone. I don't know if this was the proper way to fix the problem, but right now, it works for me...I just hope someone doesn't come along with a horror story about truing up a wheel this way...Thanks for the input along the way.

Well beltrunner, that might explain why so many of the Honeycombs wheels seem to be bent or have the "wobbling" effect when in motion. I've tried several different wheels on my cars, had them both spin balanced and bubble balanced, and I still get a vibration around 65-70 mph. Before and after that speed, the vibration is not there. Maybe that over-torquing problem can lead to this vibration. Let us know if you have any other problems relating to this procedure.
