Hi guys, question, who is making the best trunk rubber seal and where is the start/end point for the seal, would it start and finish at the center rear.. (closet to the rear window) or would it start/finish at the center trunk lock location? mine was removed and replaced years ago, and I can't find any info on the installation, Thanks Mike

I just re-did mine as it got ripped. I've checked many supplyers and the price ranges from $15 up to $29. I just did a quick check on epay and found Goodmark.
Fit & finish is perfect. Check on epay summit sells them for under $10.

As far as the seam, I respectfully disagree with the seam being at the top. Think about the rear design. The trunk rail/gutter is higher at the back (closest to the glass) the rear edge above the tail panel is lower and rolls downward. Water runs down hill, so why would you put the seam at the top?
This would allow the water to enter into/under the seal. With the seam at the lowest point the water is lead down to the bottom and will run off/out before meeting the seam.
The Fisher body manual even states this.

I recently replaced my original as well (kept it) and my seam was off to the left of the trunk lock. In fact, it looked identical to the pic Charles posted. All of the seals/rubber is original on my car but man are they dry. I too need door, roof rail, quarter glass, U-jamb and inner/outter fuzzies all the way around on my car.

Hmm, may be another factory to factory issue.
Many a parts car have shown the same.
Interesting, I myself have never seen it the way yours is installed.
The 66 Fisher Body manual confirms my statement.

But I for one never say never.

However IMO based on the basic design of the gutter it makes sence to set it at the lowest point.

My original was changed by myself a good 27 years ago and I had the joint on the LH side of the trunk opening siliconed together then. Knew it wasn't correct, but I had not written it down or had pictures of original installation. I have to do it again very soon and I would like to do it right this time.

Joe, are you saying that yours was siliconed together just to the left of the tear in the second picture I posted?

Andre, chime in here again buddy, give us your opinion and/or observations..

The 67 Fisher Body manual says the same thing as what you said. Butt joint at rear center.

In 1980, when I removed the original one from my 66GTO, the seam lined up relatively close to the lock cylinder (middle). This was the skinned seal from GM, and I know that it had not ever been out of the car.

My Baltimore- built '67 had the seam in the middle rear above the lock cylinder. It appeared to be original, but may not have been as I bought the car used in 1983. I replaced the seal in 1986 and installed it the same way. The idea of a seam that is not in an area of standing water makes a whole lot of sense to me, too.

These probably were installed a couple different ways. Mine was rear center lock as far as I know. For water flow it makes to most sense too. So, if there are several "right" ways, I'd follow the Fisher Body Manual.

Rear left of center as per Old Goat's pic. IMHO, the metro seal was bulkier than original and hard to manage. Bigger isn't always better...

True but it might seal better with the Metro seal. Mine needs replacing as it has let water into the trunk.

There are a million restored (most incorrectly) GTO's out there, but not many untouched/slightly touched Factory Original Survivors for all of us to enjoy! Great reference for all! Regards, Chris.
