Default Parking Brake Light for 1968 GTO

Can anyone tell me what is supposed to be where the emerg. brake pedal contacts the wire to the brake light? I have a bolt with a hole in it with a spring sticking out of the top of it & a wire on the bottom of the bolt (wire falls out). The light used to work but I can't get it to work now, not sure of how it should work. The connection at the pedal has been loose since I've had the car but I could usually wiggle it & get it to work.

Is there any connection between this & the buzzer (key in ignition with door open). I noticed the short fuse on the bottom of fuse box is not hot on either side, switch on or off, wondered what it was for, can't read what it says.

Thanks for any help.

Bill

Sounds like it fell apart. There should be a button in front of that spring. Much like the button in the doorjamb that turns on the courtesy light.
I can get a picture tonight if needed since mine is hanging by the wire right now.

Here is a pic of the switch itself (less the wire)...

Robz's got it. The wire has a bullet connector that pushes into the bottom of that switch. Just about every one I've ever tried removing pulls the metal tang off the bottom as the bullet connector doesn't like to come back out so that piece is still probably on the end of your wire.

Thank you all for the replies. I will replace with new part. But shouldn't it work when I touch it to the park brake pedal? It used to work until I drove it a couple of times. That's why I was wondering about the fuse.

Thanks again.

it works exactly like the door jamb switch, when the pedal is pushed, it releases spring tension on the pin and the switch grounds to the pedal assembly. If you ground that wire the light should come on. if it's not, either your circuit's not getting power or the pedal no longer has a good ground. Did you have the pedal out? usually doesn't lose a good ground unless it's been removed. then you need to clean the hell out of the mounting studs and firewall.

Were these switches used on 1969 GTO's as well as 68? I have a tan-wired bullet connector hanging and assumed it was for the brake light assembly. Its a new harness and might have been generic for the 1968/69 and this is an extra. I looked at the assembly and cannot find anywhere that a switch would screw into. Confirmation either way or a pic of the switch in the assembly would be great.

Yes, the switch is the same for 69, and for most all of the GM cars from that era.

There are a few different e-brake assembly designs that were used, but as far as I know the switch is always screwed in just in front of where the brake cable connects. Here is a pic of mine with the tan wire hooked up.

That same circuit branches out to the prop valve wire also. So if u have the ebrake or fluid loss the brake light comes on.

Hey PontGuy, that pedal assembly looks real nice! Is that paint or blasted and cleared on the non black areas? Sorry to get off topic.

Thanks, that e-brake was a "lucky" e-bay deal. I ran across it while hunting down parts for the dash restore that I did a few months ago, put in the minimum bid which was only $20 or so and nobody else bid on it. I remember thinking that the description was pretty lame, something about pulling it out of a judge 20+ years ago, restoring it and then not using it. But I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened the box because it turned out to be an original in mint condition.

Honestly I couldn't tell you how it was restored. Maybe powder-coated? Its definitely not painted except for the black trim.
