Flexplate - straight or is slight bow normal?
I'm new to this automagic world so sorry for such a noob question but I didn't find the answer on my search.
I've opened my new SFI flexplate box and I see that the flat surface that is actually not flat. The steel actually has a slight bow to it. I called the manufacturer and he said it will straighen when installed and flex again upon first startup. Additionally, I checked a SBC Scat unit (nice piece) and see what appears to be an intentional bow. What's the feedback concerning this concave form - is this nothing to worry about, expected, doesn't matter because it flexes when driving? I'm leaning towards running it but this is my first race auto install so I wanted to double check. Thanks for the input. --Joe . |

What brand?
I put a new Scat flexplate on my 474 build last year and I replaced it after about 10 passes. It eat the rotor on my starter. I installed a JW wheel and have not had any problems. It did not have a bow at all. Tom |

My JW is flat too, I've not seen a bowed flexplate before and wouldn't use one if it was.

It was the Hays SFI unit. It's pretty even all the way around but we're going to spin it up to be sure. If it's not symetrical, then we'll replace it with one of the more expensive alternatives. I was trying to save 100 smackers by going with Hays instead of TCI or JW but we'll see...
The SCAT I looked at also had a slight bow to it as well and it was also new in the box straight from SCAT. I watched a video of one in operation on YouTube and it looks like it really does flex quite a bit. |

Just buy a meizere billet unit... I have a JW - I had teeth chip off the ring gear after less then 10 starts. The problem had to do with how the teeth were cut - They ended up welding the ring gear off my original '68 flexplate onto their flexplate to resolve the issue.
