Ah! I knew I had seen more than one picture of the 421 'Pyramid' Block and the 421 Pistons in the block in the GTO.
This was the driver's (opposite) side of the engine when the 421 engine was installed. Again the Pyramid is visible though not as clear. You can also identify the Blue Car's Michigan Plate HJ-4471, and as you said, the lack of any outside rear view mirror. The Earlier Blue Car also had the old style 389 SD Mechanical Linkage installed on the carbs. They, at least, have the SD Tri-Power (Tube and Plunger) installed correctly in the picture. Plunger end attached to the Triangular Plate on the center carb. Tom V.

I was just looking thru these posts again and I had a thought.
What if the Blue Car DID have a 421 as we’ve see in some of the pics/articles. The Red car is built and Wangers thinks to himself “what if I just do an engine swap between the Blue and Red cars?? What if the Red car was running the 421 out of the Blue car?? Would you run a new 421 engine in the Red car for the acceleration test without knowing what it could do? I wouldn’t. I would run the 421 motor thats already been tested from the Blue car. Then the 389 out of the Red car was put into the Blue car.

I suspect not.
Keep in mind at PMD (or GM in general) if you want anything - anything at all, including a complete prototype or production engine - you just go to the parts counter with a part number and the item magically appears. There's really no motivation to engage in any kind of shell game, especially if it results in extra work. And if there was any concern (even though these guys build engines all day every day) you would just check the new engine on a run in stand or dyno. K
