Headliner Install
Looking for tips on headliner install...
79 Formula with the perforated vinyl. I have the 3M trim spray adhesive. Is the best approach to remove the ceiling backing board from the car, install the liner, then replace the board back into the cabin? Thanks. |

Remove the cardboard headliner from the car. Wire brush all the old rotted foam off of it. Tape over the staple/pin holes from the last owner with good masking tape (little pieces, this eliminates low spots). Repair cracks with glue (like seal-all) if you need to reinforce areas you can do it on the back with headliner pieces from another junkyard headliner. Lay your headliner cardboard on a big clean board or floor and put your perforated material on it and fold it in half. spray the exposed half the board and cloth back and forth then up and down. Start in the middle at the fold and with clean hands smooth out the material, working toward the edges, repeat for the other half. trim the edges and dome light hole and re-install. Make sure you use the adhesive from 3m that says "for headliners". Not a hard job.

Cleaning the old headliner board to remove the rotted foam is critical. I couldn't find the adhesive mr twister mentioned so i used a light coat of rubber cement instead. It seems to be holding up fine so far. Ordinary adhesives will not work.

Bigger NAPA stores have the 3m product for the headliners. I did the headliner in my GP and It looks great, I also took a few minutes to upgrade to a lighted rear view mirror (Chevy Cobalt 3 wires) while The headliner was out.

Thanks Twister, sounds like a good approach.
Hope to give it a shot tomorrow. The adhesive i have is 3M trim adhesive. It says Not for heavy headliners or vinyl tops, but for light carpet and trim. The directions say to spray each surface twice, both ways, wait 1-3 minutes, then mate. |

I got the cardboard out, cleaned up and laid the headliner on to
assess the fit, and to my amazement, the headliner is about 3" too short from front to back! wth? The width isn't too far off, but the length is nowhere near what it needs to be... I guess the first question is: can you shrink a vinyl headliner? It's been off the car for at least 2 years, last week i washed it in warm mild soapy water to clean it, then just let it air dry... Second question: can it be restretched? I tried for a while but it isn't making a dent. |

If the foam is rotted off the back of the headliner it is junk, which, based on the above comments it is. Go to a local auto upholstery shop and buy some new material. It will be about 30-40 dollars. If you don't want to do that, there is always ebay. OH.. and maybe PY has it.
