Angry GM Techs-2010 Equinox high pressure fuel pump failure

I have a 2010 Equinox with the 2.4L 4-cyl, FWD with about 42k miles. The engine started idling a little rough a few weeks ago and it seemed a little down on power. The check engine light came on then went off after 3 restarts. Then a few days later the Service Stabilitrak warning came on. I took it to the local dealer who had it a day and a half before he came back with the diagnosis of the high pressure fuel pump failure. This is the 2000 psi pump for the direct injection, not the in tank low pressure pump. This is NOT covered under the 100k powertrain warranty. The replacement cost: $623. They have had the vehicle since 2/14 and are still waiting on the back-ordered pump. The good news is the Equinox is a company lease vehicle so I am not out any money. The bad news is my employer is for both the repair and the rental car I've had for a week so far. Even this would not be a big deal except my employer operates probably several hundred of these vehicles. At least 5 others in my area are experiencing the same issues plus dieseling after ignition off (unburned excess fuel lighting off in the cylinders.) We all took delivery around Jan-Feb 2010 and have 39K-50K miles on the vehicles. Our fleet manager has contacted GM as this could cost our company $1 million or more. So far I have not found any TSB for this issue but I would think there would be. Any GM techs have any info on this issue? I would definitely like to get to the bottom of this as my employer's bottom line affects my pay too.

Thanks

PS. I do not know the code numbers that were set but the service writer said multiple engine misfires and lean condition codes were set.

Your on the right track, follow through with GM directly, let them handle it. I have heard of faulty high psi pumps leaking and causing the problems of driveability that you noted. More then likely the pump is leaking. Bad news is it's probably built by some crappy supplier and until all the old pumps cycle the system it may happen again. This is no different for any manufacture. I bet GM will foot the bill on it.

The fleet manager should make his way to the top of the GM food chain and explain to them the kind of money your company is spending with them and that will all go away when they turn back the leases and go get some Ford Escapes or Honda CRVs...if they care about the business in the least they will fix the vehicles at no charge...The only bulletin I found was related to a noisey pump/injectors stating that this was a normal condition...uh yeah, right????

Keep your eyes peeled for bulletins in the next year or so, GM may reimburse after the fact.

With customer service like this, we should have let them go out of business...

I would cry foul
its part of the emission system, should be covered by the 8 yr warranty.
If GM doesnt cover it under goodwill(even tho its really a warranty item)file a class action suit.
Why cant anyone get a high pressure system right? They had problems with pumps and injectors on the Duramax as well.Only difference is the diesels operate at least 10x higher

Another thing I didn't mention is that gasoline will wash down into the crankcase diluting the oil. I read one report of camshaft damage. This could obviously be a major problem.

Seen a high pressure line failure on an 05' Dodge Ram 2500 as well, on a friend of mine's truck. Sprayed diesel fuel all under the hood and underside of the truck. The "high pressure" direct injection may seem like the answer to the manufacturers prayers, and is a key element in getting extra power and effeciency out of these engines, but they add even more potential "headaches" for the consumer and technicians alike.

This is from the high psi pump leaking, that's one sign that the dealer knows what the problem is.

Red face defects in fleet vehicles!!!

my company bought around 240 of the new caravans 3 years ago. My unit and 170ish
of the rest of our company fleet all had the high pressure ac line fail and leak freon charge.
most of units happened around 50,000 miles. after some corporate screaming by our home
office, they warrantied all units and even upgraded the units that were still func. regardless of mileage.

new line was redisigned longer to not stress comp fitting.

If you are a fleet buyer you have a large and loud voice.

Go high in the food chain, and say fine if you don't cover repairs then you won't
be quoting on our next fleet purchase!!!

Good Luck

we have had to do a couple of these now, both under warranty (less than 36k miles) took a couple of weeks for me to get both our pumps. there is also a fuel line that HAS to be replaced when they do this. according to gm it is a one time use line. once you break it loose, supposedly it will not seal again. same syptoms as you described. not seeing a tsb on it right now either. this is the only thing i can find as on now....

dont know if it will help you any, but this problem does definatly exist and is not all that rare. we are a smaller dealership in the sceam of things and like i said we did 2 this month already.

Finally got mine back yesterday. $680 repair. They replaced the pump and the line like IOWA552SLOW said. Looks like GM may Goodwill mine at least partially. First co-worker took his in to a different dealer today. They told him throttle body. Yeah, right.

Car definitely runs better, but GM does have a big problem on its hands until it gets this made right.
