pinion yoke question
I recently purchased a used rearend thet i am going to build back to a 3.23 posi. the pinion yoke had a bolt broke off in it where the u joint strap bolts go. the previous owner apparently attempted to drill the bolt out screwing up the threads in that hole. My question is this : can i drill the other three out (removing the threads) and just use the u bolt style u joint straps with the nuts on them, or is the spacing different on the yokes that use this type instead of the straps

I've never compared them side by side but I think the yokes that use the straps have the u-joint caps sit deeper in the yoke than the yokes with the u-bolts. That might affect how/where the u-bolts clamp against the caps. And of course the holes would have to have to be centered too. I'd consider buying a replacement yoke and not worry with the damaged one.

Since you are going to build the rear....why not just swap out the pinion yoke....lot easier and safer.

I was thinking of taking the one off of the rearend i am replacing but i understand that by taking the pinion yoke off of that one that it would screw up the pinion bearing preload if i ever put it back on. so i kind of wanted to keep the old rear together as a spare with all of its parts intact and together. I am working on a very limited budget as i am sure we all are and was trying to avoid having to buy anyrhing new that i really didn't absolutely need. all the pinion yokes i have found online are $60.00 and up or i can find them on ebay but by the time you add shipping they are back up to $60.00. that is more than i have to spend right now, so i was hoping that i could still use the one that came on this rear, or find a member on here that had a used one for a decent price. I will continue to look for one.

You can remove and replace the yoke with affecting pre-load.....just install it and set the pre-load with an inch-pound torque ratchet......10-15 in-lbs is all that is needed.
Contact Jim at www.jdrace.com and he can help you and tell you what you need to do...he is super knowledgeable. I am sure he has a yoke for much much less than $60 |

But as i understand it the preload would need to be set with no axles in the carrier and i was hoping to avoid disassembly of the old unit later in order to reinstall the pinion yoke. i just wanted to take it out of the car and not touch it and keep it as a spare. i will check out the link you gave me and see about a pinion yoke
