Thumbs up Q-jet & HEI results

This weekend I really got to test the Q-jet I got back from Cliff a few weeks back.
The Q-jet ran perfect out of the box and my 400 had more power
and better response in all areas. Motor now pulls harder with no flat spots.
The idle quality is greatly improved in and out of gear, and a crisp throttle response.
I found I was now able to set initial timing down to 10 degrees and not have barely any
drop when placed into gear.

All my expectation were more than satisfied.

Here is another great benefit. Last summer I was averaging 9-10 miles per gallon with the
Q-jet I had setup. With the prepared unit from Cliff and my HEI setup by Bob Davis(installed in december). Those were the only 2 changes, I now averaged 15 miles per gallon. I used 12 gallons of fuel and traveled a total of 184 miles. This 184 mile number includes several short trips and one long run last Sunday where the most miles were done.
Yes the secondaries come in like clockwork and were tested on multiple occasions!
the setup is a 68 400,Cliff's Q-jet, HEI, 068 cam with a T400, stock converter and a 3:08 rear gearing.

My numbers may get better, but who can resist opening up the secondaries a few times
during a tank of fuel.

Thanks to both Cliff and Bob for the great service!

Gerry Ciottariello

Yep. They say a scienced out Q-jet is the "fuel injection" of carburetors.

Good news Gerry. I've never managed to get thru an entire tank of fuel either without a few full throttle blasts. Maybe if I had more restraint I could get over 200 miles per tank, but to date I've never found the willpower to drive my car that far without tapping into some of the power a few times!......Cliff

Gerry
Thanks for posting up your mileage and your combo.
What 068 cam are you using, Mellings or someones version of it?
What exhaust are you running headers or manifolds?

I did the same thing you did. I sent my carb to Cliff and my dist to Bob. Got them both back right after Xmas. The only diff between us is my 68 GTO is a 4-speed with 3:55 rear. I couldn't be happier with the way it runs now. I'm wanting to see what kind of 1/4 time she would turn, but there is no drag strips in my area. My car is a matching number WS code 360 HP 400 H.O.. The engine is stock except for a set of Hedman shorty headers. Anybody have any idea about what it should run in the 1/4? I'm thinking low 14's, but thats just a guess as I have never seen one of these bone stock run.

I'm trying to get things lined up on my engine and am unfamiliar with these guys. Can you forward the contact information for Cliff and Bob Davis please? Never hurts to have a little help.

68,
Your choice of money spent on those 2 pieces, is one of the wisest chices we all should make. Does away w/ a lot of the tuning mystery.
Job well done.
Have fun!!!
Jeff

Thumbs up

Yes I must agree the money was very well spent and a very big upgrade.
The best way to describe it is like getting the best of both worlds.
Yes the car is more responsive and faster, yet it has better manners and more effecient.

The exhaust manifolds are originals and the exhaust is a duals setup with a 14" muffler.
It was already installed when I purchased the car in 2002. nicely done no clamps, all joints
welded and hung nice and tight.

rest of setup are as follows

68 400 that is 10 over (refreshed 4 years ago)
trw L2262 forged pistons(already installed when i purchased)
original 16 heads(hardened seats)
melling oil pump 60psi
melling spc-7 cam and lifters installed straight up
68 factory intake
HEI with 24* mechanical adv and 12* vacuum adv on a ported source
coverted to 69 style timing cover and 11 bolt water pump
stock fuel pump and lines

Maybe this year I will take it to E-town and she what she can do!!

In the 9 years I have owned the car the biggest improvents were

Cliff's Q-jet-
HEI from Bob
068 cam swap
factory intake (had a 70's edelbrock SP2P originally)

The best way to put it, is the parts now all work together well and since they were
all done one after the other. I was able to see an improvement after every change
and that encouraged me that I was moving in the right direction.
I wanted a really fun cruiser and to get great performance and reliablity.

Aside from Safely Tech Inspect & slicks,

All that's needed for a good 1/4mile run is an Electric fuel pump.
