Just put in a new wiper motor (69 GTO) and I think I fried it. The harness and wires in the plug/terminals are painted over and I beleive I hooked it up wrong. Played around switching the wires and now I think it has become fatal. Motor runs Hi & low speed but will not shut off plus the waher pump is no longer working.

Can someone please send a pic so I can see what wire plugs go where on the motor itself? I am going to clean up the wires with some thinner and hopefully will be able to see the colors to verify.

I have one double plug on the top part of the wiper motor, and one double plug a single on the driver side of the wiper motor.

First off, if motor runs but will not shut off, you probably have a ground issue. The motor itself should have a brass ground strap, in addition to the ground strap on the switch . The main power is black/yellow tracer and goes to the middle of the 3 prong terminal. This also jumpers over to the nearest terminal on the washer (2-prong) The other wire to this 2-prong is blue/white.The other wire that goes to the motor in the double prong is black/green, and to the single prong is blue.

Thanks..great description. I hooked up just like you stated. I do have the ground strap.

Been working on it this morning. Appart from the washer pump not working, it just does not want to turn off. When I hit the off it reverses itself, like to park the wipers and clicks once and then just keeps repeating the cycle and continues to run. I am thinking that perhaps I burnt out resistor or something.

Electrical debug is not my strong suit. Appreciate any other insight and will keep pluging away at it.

Ok continuing to debug, and did some test.

With the wiper switch in the off position, and the motor keeps running as discussed I verified what prongs have current or power.

Prongs on the motor
On the top 2 prong the (driver side or right) has current or power. If I disconnect the plug there is power on the (driver side or right harness).

On the 3 prong the top and the middle have current or power. If I disconnect the top single plug only, there is power on the top prong but not on the harness single plug itself.


Does this make sense?

Yes, it seems to make sense to me because the operation of the system is as follows: There is always power to your wiper motor (with key on). The circuit is completed by the switch which actually grounds out to the dash when you turn it on. Since the black/yellow jumper provides power, it makes sense that the power would go thru the wiper motor (and washer pump) and return to the switch. When the switch is on, it grounds and completes the circuit(s). After the switch is turned off, the ground is broken,but another ground (I think) allows the motor to "park". (Not sure how this function works) All 3 of the other wires, according to my schematic, go from the wiper motor/washer pump, thru the firewall connector, and directly to the switch. Your question might be better answered by Quicksilver or George K, they are both really experts on this type of thing. If you do a search, there might be a lot better info for you. Good luck.

Just curious, Ive been following the thread, and I'm going to be hooking mine up soon. Is the ground strap part of the wiper motor or is it seperate? My car didnt have a wiper motor on it when I bought it and dont remember seeing on on the motor I got.

Ground strap is part of the motor assembly, and is on the lower driver side mounting lug.


Follow up on mine. Been checking everything out and I beleive the problem is possibly internal. Something is not catching I beleive inside in order to make it park and turn off. I am going to ship mine back and have the company I bought it from check it out. I have ran through everything and don't think it is a ground problem.

Switch checks out and is good. Low, high, and washer on the switch work.

Here is where I am at today

Something is out of whack in the back of the unit where it bolts to the wiper linkage. I got the unit to work, and ironically as soon as I tried hooking up the wiper linkage or assemble it started running (switch in the off position). First thing I thought OK it has to be some sort of ground short. I unplugged it, unbolted the wiper linkage off and plugged it back in.

I then took a wooden dowel and gently nudged the bolt or thread and it started again.

Currently I think I either did something to it when initially hooking it up, or I have a defective unit.

Simple job has turned into a complex. I will plug away at it some more this evening.
