Jetaway transmissions/ 315
Jetaway transmissions / 315 not the Slim Jim. How did this 4 speed transmission work? Did it actually have 4 speeds? or did the converter lock up? How would one of these compare to a modern 4 spd automatic? Would I be better off to rebuild or to swap to a newer 4 spd auto? Thanks for any input

Jet-Away (Oldsmobile's name- can't remember Pontiac's name) were truly a 4-speed. However, the small extra fluid coupling (they were called Dual-Coupling Hydramatics) took the place of a previous clutch in the older Dual-Range transmissions. A shift into 2nd or into 4th gear involved filling the empty front coupling with fluid, so these shifts were "soft"- and no amount of internal modification could improve them much. They aren't "bad" transmissions, and some owners really like them. But like any old Hydramatic, they can be difficult (expensive) to repair or rebuild.

Pontiac called it a Strato Flite and a Super Hydramatic.
It is in direct drive in 4th. With a modern 4 speed, it is in OD in 4th.

Fantastic transmission if you can find somebody who really knows their way around one to rebuild correctly. Love the hell out of mine! It's the only automatic transmission I have ever warmed up to. Drove 'em all: Torqueflite (904 & 727), C-4, C-6, Cruise-o-matics, Powerjoke (powerglide) TH-350 and 400's....the list goes on.

Also, the four speed automatic, as found in Bonneville & Star Chief, has 1st and 2nd gear mated together internally. When the gear selector is in "L", you get both. You are out of 1st by 10 mph. If you have one of these and you pay close attention, you can hear and feel the embedded shift.
Just to clarify, is this idea for a '61 Vent? If so, you need to open up your trans tunnel with at least a BFH, if not a torch.

From 61-64, Pontiac Jetaways were all aluminum. A few 64 Pontiac Jetways did have a cast iron case. I have seen 2.
