Is there more than one 700R4? I have seen an add in my local paper, that the person says it is a 27 spline so it must be for a V6? any ideas I figured for 50 bucks it would be a good core? Any opinions Thanks.

The '87 & up are the good ones to get, FYI last year i had one built for my camaro 383 517 hp don't scrimp on the lock up converter also, & MAKE SURE the throttle cable has the right geometry & proper tension for the line pressures or else it will burn the clutches in the first few miles. Hope this helps you out some.

Hard to go wrong for $50 if it doesn't have the insides sticking out of the case. If you are building a performance trans, most all the internals are going to be replaced anyway.

It's an early unit, without the factory upgrades. Cost more money to build one, at least for high performance use. A 1987 or newer unit is a much better starting point, if you are going to put a strong running Pontiac engine in front of it, IMHO.....Cliff

Are there any numbers or letters on the case that would tell me the year or close to what year? Thanks

Our book has a really nice pic on how to identify one. Look for one with a TV cable, then look at the drivers side portion of the case. There is a large "cam lobe" shaped casting line running up thru the cooling lines.
The only other positive ID without running tag numbers is to remove the oil pan and look for the auxilary valve body and hydraulic line running to it.....Cliff http://www.cliffshighperformance.com/buy_book_T.html
