When I replace my valve covers, should I use RTV, purchase a pontiac gasket, or use both?

I used the original cork gaskets on my 326 with Permatex Hylomar non-hardening sealant. They haven't leaked since I assembled them 8 years ago. I think the most important thing is to not tighten them down to much ( I think it is in the in-lbs range), that is by far the most common mistake made causing leaks.
