PHOENIX, May 13 (UPI) -- Two U.S. Border Patrol agents pursuing suspected illegal immigrants were killed when their vehicle was struck by a freight train in Arizona, officials said.

A Border Patrol spokesman said Hector Clark, 39, and Edward Rojas, 34, were assisting other agents in the chase near Gila Bend Thursday when the Union Pacific train hit them as they crossed the tracks, the Los Angeles Times reported. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The unmarked vehicle was struck broadside and pushed more than a half-mile before the train finally stopped, The Arizona Republic reported.

The train crew saw the vehicle driving on a frontage road by the tracks when it suddenly moved onto a private crossing in front of the fast-moving train, Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt said.

Kenneth Quillin, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman, said Clark and Rojas were with a federally funded interagency task force formed to intercept marijuana runners.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said a preliminary investigation indicated agents spotted a group of people traveling on foot near Gila Bend late Wednesday but waited until Thursday morning to act. Sheriff's deputies later arrested what is believed to be the same group of eight suspected illegal immigrants with about 315 pounds of marijuana near the crash site, Arpaio said in a statement.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano expressed "our deepest sympathies" to the agents' families and friends.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer ordered flags be flown at half-staff.

"While we await details of how this tragedy happened," she said in a statement, "I ask that Arizonans join me in offering a prayer for these two agents and their friends and family."

A big reason I stay off the extra board any more is that I don't care for those cab rides. CP started using Coach America a couple years ago, what a scumbag company. Some of these drivers are lucky if they make enough to buy a value meal at the end of there shift so you can imagine the quality of drivers they get. Did you hear about the crew in the Coach America van in Washington a couple months go? Couldn't even imagine being the crew members on the train that hit them.

2 teen girls laying in the sun , on the tracks, near here( headphones, music, Ipod) was 2 years ago, lost legs . Train carries 100 cars of Rocks, stone to Boston. the engineer blasted horn, could be heard for miles, brakes locked, I am so shocked they didnt feel any vibration . I see ( girls more than boys, but both do it)walk while texting, right into poles, trees, cars, other people etc.

I have always loved trains. My earliest train memories are from when I was a young boy - 4, 5 & 6 yrs old. Running to the back of my Great Grandmothers' property in Albuquerque watching & waving to the Santa Fe conductors of the Diesel Locomotive freighter trains as they were in ultra low gear straining pulling those loads. I loved to literally feel the earth move from the power! Hooked on torque right from the start! That translated to Pontiac torque later in life!L

I was able to enjoy a round-trip ride on the Durango Silverton narrow guage a few years ago and have included my photos taken while on that ride. I recomend anyone who wants to enjoy this trip to call ahead and book your ride on the "Parlor Car" Caboose. It is well worth the extra few $ and where you are encouraged to take as many photos as the train runs as you wish.

All we have in this town is a 2-8-0. I used to hear it everyday at the other house.
When someone from out of town was over and the whistle blew you can see the magic in their eye at hearing it.

I used to work across the street from the old Georgia Railroad Museum shop and they ran those things regularly. I've even got some VHS footage somewhere.
There is definitely something magical about standing near an operating steam locomotive. It's a feast for all of the senses....you can even taste it in the air.
Anyone who's been around one a bit will know what I'm talking about.
