How about just using a CS-144 alternator? They interchange on the stock Pontiac brackets and come with a serpentine pulley. I have a CS-144 on my '66 GTO and retrofitted a Vee pulley. Still have that serpentine pulley somewhere... need to look at it. As I recall, it has the same offset as the Vee pulley I used, which came from an early 80's FWD GM car. CS-144's came on all LT1's, Cadillac Northstars, and others and seem to be one of the more durable alternators GM made. Here's a pic of my '66 showing the CS-144:

If you had brought this up earlier I would have jumped on it. Now, since I already have those (but not tweeked yet) it would be a tough call. Depends a lot on the price.

But I agree, if you do this you should be able to sell a ton of these. If you could also do the spacers that would really be a killer item. Might be a good Ebay candidate.

Read post #69. Jimmo lists all the sources for the pulleys and spacers for the conversion.
He lists the source of the spacers as http://www.aluminumspacers.com/
The listed spacers are off the shelf items.
check it out, I found some other spacers I was looking for.
The only other item he would have to fabricate is the power steering pump spacer shown in post #16

WOW! pretty cool. Ill have to do some figuring. I actually sent a drawing of the power steering spacer to a guy but he never got back to me with a quote. Now I,m scratchin my head as far as putting together complete kits with all pulleys and fasteners and or just those 3 hard to get parts.
Either way it looks like a trip to the junkyard is in order.

The whine could be caused by a slight misalignment between the pulleys. A straightedge should show that the front and rear of the pulleys are in line. You can use a piece of tubing to listen to each pulley and probably isolate the culprits.

Rusty pulleys can also cause whine.

Was doing some online research, and found that there are 3 different amp alternators for the 98 Jetta 2.0. Any idea what size the one you got the pulley from was? Don't know if there is a difference in the pulleys.

It was a Bosch 90 amp. The 98 jetta is my work beater, thats how I discovered that pulley. After searching the junkyard I realized it was under my hood the whole time.

I finally got started a little on mine. Got the stock water pump and crank pulleys off, and used the crank spacer as a pattern to drill the new crank pulley for the Pontiac bolt pattern. Man, that center hole is just a tad small. Was almost tempted to see if I could use a hammer on it to make it fit. :-) But seriously, I think that I could enlarge it with a half round file if nothing else.
Haven't gotten the spacers or power steering pulley yet. Have to wait a bit before I can start spending money on the car again.

While ya have that stuff off, do ya think you can post a measurement of the thickness of the crank pulley spacer? Im just curious and I dont have one to measure.

Ok, I asked a machinist type here at work to measure the thickness of that plate. He said it is "108+/-2". I guess that means 0.108 inches? He said it was almost 7/64ths of an inch. Or could it the 108 have been millimeters? Hope those numbers mean something to you. :-)
