Default 68 M20 VIN & date code

My original M20 has the date code but not the partial VIN. It's from Rollins plant. Alot of tranny's out there not get the VIN stamped?

It's out of my '68 with a April, third week date code. I'm just used to seeing a VIN next to it

A lot of them were not stamped, but check to top of the trans with a mirror and flashlight.

Agree, top of the case is where many 60's tranny's were stamped.

The pic I included was where Marxjunk said to look and where I've seen them on 68-70 GTO's. I've not seen them on the top but maybe Arlington, Texas plant was like Freemont, CA and stuck there VIN's somwhere else. I didn't think you could see up top with a mirror. I'll crawl back under this weekend and check it out.

Jan 1, 1968 it became a Federal law to stamp the VIN on the engine/tranny.

The partial VIN could be on top of the tranny also.

But since this is the 1st year of the law (and early months) a few may have been missed?

cant get to my 68 tranny's but heres a couple 69s that where easy to get to. They are both on top on the flange at the rear next to the mid plate/tail shafts..i have 10 or so
68s and about the same number of 69s and the VINs are all in the same spot as these..ive seen them in other spots on 70 up and 66-7s

Mark, I'm guessing those are both passenger side? Also both are from Atlanta...any chance that's just an Atlanta thing? Sorry to keep asking nagging questions...

Couldn't wait till Saturday...Iphone pic. Too blurry or not there and couldn't feel anything up there.

Go to the barn to get the mirror...Had to get my glasses, flashlight and took a double take.

Good job guys and thanks for the info!
