NEVER tie one to the other! Get her something nice because you thought of her on some random Tuesday - not because your car is on it's way.

If she painted portraits and bought herself a Coach bag when she sold one - you wouldn't be expecting a torque wrench!

Good thing the car isn't coming from Alaska....... A little bit further west and the roads are terrible this time of year! What broker are you using for the border crossing? Car looks very nice and am sure it will be happy to be back stateside after 40 years. Congrats....... :-)

I have a hunch that the space saver spare is not an original option on this car. Doesn't show N65 anywhere and the trunk brackets for the jack stand are for a full sized tire orientation. No biggie, just as cool either way.

Do you have any reference photos to compare to? The spare and jack brackets on my car have factory spot welds holding them in place. Or is that just a space saver plunked down in the full sized spare position? Didn't the space saver have a different location for the tire hold down bracket?

Steve, this thread went into space saver some. The 1970 and 1971 assembly manuals show how the space saver was stowed. Check Option N in your 1972 manual and see if it shows something similar. Brackets were in a substantially different location, according to those manuals. However, since the brackets were supposed to be welded in place by Fischer before reaching GM, I'm not sure how they knew which bodies needed which brackets. I guess it would be similar to how they handled four speed versus automatic, etc.

The car is slowly making its way to the East Coast. While waiting I needed something to do so I started tinkering with the extra set of grills I have for a 72. I used my tried and true plastic paint stripping method of soaking the parts in "purple stuff" degreaser. It is the best thing I have found for removing paint from plastic without harming the plastic.

Here is one of the grills outside the vat while the other one is soaking:



And the results after about a day of soaking, scrubbing gently with a plastic bristle brush and fine scotchbrite pad and then resoaking. Kind of like the "Lather, Rinse, Repeat" directions on your shampoo bottle.

And here is the reason for using the other grills. It seems that the second owner, in an effort to stop the car thieves in his area, used fiberglass to seal the hood latch access opening in the driver's side grill. He then installed an inside-the-car hood release cable. It requires two people to open the hood, one pulling and holding the release cable and the other lifting the hood. I think this is where the Strategic Air Command got the idea for the "two key" missle launch system. :-)



He was not paranoid, as the car was victimized twice while he owned it. Once in the late 1980s when the seats (and sadly, the broadcast sheet along with them) were stolen, and another time in the 1990s when the ignition was popped and they tried to take the car.
