Default Anyone here run?

I used to run a lot years ago. I had to stop while going through a custody battle for my kids about 10 years back. The change in shifts and lifestyle at that time=I didn't have a minute to spare.
After quitting chewing tobacco last year I went from an already fat 215lbs. to 235lbs. I was so uncomfortable at 235lbs. I felt like I got winded bending over to tie my shoes!I never really cared how I LOOKED,but FEELING fat was the last straw. I started running again about 5-6 weeks ago. I feel better than I have in years I must say. Just trying to build up slowly to keep my knees/feet happy.
I'm a LONG ways off of the 160 lbs. a was 10 years ago,and have a long way to go before I can think about running any timed races, but I'm making progress.
Anybody else here run?

Occasionally. I don't have as much time these days to devote to things like that, but hope to have more this summer. I also like to do some road biking. I will say that when I get in a good rhythm, I feel MUCH better! Good luck with getting back into it!

I love to run. I used to run all the time when I was in the service but it kinda made me not enjoy it when your forced to do it. When I got out I started to run again and found myself running further and further each time I ran. I was up to running 6-8 miles at a time. One night I was enjoying the run so much I ended up running 10 miles. My knees and ankle paid dearly for it later. Then things started getting busy and I found less time to run and more reason why I couldn't run. As you stated, I found myself gaining more weight and wasn't liking what I was seeing. I finally decided to do something about it, I bought a workout set called "Insanity" which has been kicking my butt for the last two months. Even though it's not for everyone, it has certainly helped me not only getting me in shape but giving me motivation to start running again. Good luck with your goals, and remember it may suck, it may be painful, but we all know how good it feel after you finish the run.

I picked up running about 2 years ago. I try to go 2 miles every day and try to run a 5k once a week. If it wasn't for the iPod, I wouldn't know what to do...but I like getting out at lunch and getting lost in music.

I had an echo stress test today -- pretty funny -- I kept telling them how much I run and the just kept saying "the machine wins in the end". Man, were they right!! I couldn't compete with the incline on the tread mill. You know, here in FL we have no hills

I was never much of a runner, but I really look forward to it every day now...strange.

Keep it up and you'll drop the weight, for sure!

I don't jog, but I powerwalk with the wife if that counts.

I run but I try to mix up a lot of different activities - hiking, different cardio machines (elliptical, stepper), lift weights, punch a heavy bag, sometimes circuit training. If I just run all the time I get overuse injuries, spreading it out like this seems to cut down on the injuries.

I just ran a 10k last weekend Beat my PR 44:19. My goal is to run a sub 40 min 10k. I want to achieve my goal this September at the Prefontaine Memorial 10k. I am doing a non profit fund raiser on my 45th birthday this May I am running 45 miles to raise money and awareness for our local Project Unify/Special Olympics.

Main thing when running at our age is warm up, cool down, and stretching in that order. Focus on your illialtibial band find some good I.T. band stretches, a foam roller works well. Increase mileage slowly. Feet, I won't go in to that!

That power walking stuff is no joke... Back in the army, we used to make fun of the guys who had to powerwalk, calling them "profile rangers", "POS", etc.... Then one day for our workout we had one of the guys who had a "no run" profile lead the physical training... He made us power walk for 5 miles and we only had 45min... Now that sounds like a-lot of time but when you can't run, it FU NG sucks. My thighs/ calfs burned and ached so bad it actually made me wanna cry... lol.. We never made fun of anyone power walking again... ... So I'm telling you brother, IT COUNTS!!!

I run from my problems

Seriously though, I do light jogs with interval sprints with no certain distance in mind.

Just started; my wife and I will be running the Chicago Marathon in October, which you may hear more about.

Drake - you might check into the Jeff Galloway "Run/walk/run" strategy. It's a great way to ease back into the running lifestyle and may keep you from getting burned out or (worse) injured in the meantime.

I use to love to run a few miles every night, usually between 19:00 and 23:00. The cool of the evening is the best time of the day. I'm a zombie before noon so mornings are out of the question. Last year my hips started hurting really bad when walking or standing; running is out of the question. Doctor said it was a compressed nerve in my spine; just my body and spine showing wear-and-tear. I tried therapy and it didn't help. I tried spinal injections and the pain returned in two weeks. I'm a coward when it comes to surgery so here I am; watching runners and wishing for the days when I could run for hours. I'm 63 and I thought I'd be running into my 70's.

regards to all and envying those who still run.

Cool,a few replies.
Yeah, one of my problems is still TIME. With 7 kids, many of them in sports, school, and just the general chaos of my everyday life,it's hard to find time. I told my wife I don't care if I have to wake up an hour early to run,I need to do this. I've had the longing to get back into it for years, but I've been too busy to dedicate myself to it. Now I'm sick of waiting,so I jumped back in.
One other thing that comes up is I am on 3rd shift now. I HAVE to run right when I wake up,or soon after, because if I run with anything in my stomach,I just throw it up! I also tried running at the end of the day years back, and I just feel too weighed down if I don't run early in the day. That's tough, because when I wake up at 4 or 5 PM,my family is just eating supper. In the past few years I just sat down with my coffee and chowed down with them. Now I don't eat anything "heavy" till the end of my day, like after 4 AM. If I do eat anything before I run,it has to be something light, like fruit. This is the way I've always done it. It also helps with the weight issue not eating a pizza the minute I wake up!
Keith,I'll look up that Jeff Galloway guy. I went to my sports Dr. a few weeks back, just to get a general check over and he gave me the thumbs up to keep running, but I do worry about injury. I'll be 50 in a few years,I'm not in my prime like I was 15 years ago.
BTW,I've already lost 12 lbs. this past past 30 days. I'll have to start digging my smaller clothes out of the bottom of my dresser.

I do. I love it. About 3 years ago, I was up to 237 and feeling like crap. I decided to quit drinking beer and teach myself to run. I was so embarrased over my huge gut (aka as beer belly) that I would get up at 4:30 in the morning and force myself to run/walk 3 miles so nobody would see me. 3 years later, I am down to 202, I run 3.5 miles at least 5 days a week and I feel great. Most of the time, I run after I get home from work in the evenings. When it is too hot, I do the 4:30 am thing. I think this is the best time as it makes the work day so much better - head is clear and I am wide awake when I get there. In the last year I started getting into trail running. Best part of that is that I can dust a lot of the younger crowd. I will be 50 next year and for an ex drunk, this is my way out.

Keith, just curious, you say you just started running, but are doing a marathon in October? I assume you were active in other sports before running? I can't imagine just starting to run, then doing a marathon 6 months later!

Jcruz, Yes the stress test treadmill will always win. These use what is called a Bruce protocol. I had guys out run the original program on one of these years ago, they were training for the Olympics. But the program can be modified to add more speed and incline. After adding three more steps they never beat it again.

I ran a 5K yesterday for MS in Philadelphia, along boathouse row. Nice morning for a run, cool without bright sun. Finished in 24'30", my best time yet.

Have done quite a bit of running in the past but not at this time as I never really enjoyed it. In my 60's now and do a lot of weight lifting and cardio. Currently training for "Half Dome" hike in 4 weeks and some long distance hiking in Yosemite. Best of luck with your program. If you stay with it you will see results!!!
