I remember at age 7 and up playing with fireworks, estes rockets, black gun powder all unsupervised, never blew myself up or caught the fields on fire. We had a steel cannon that my brother made in metal shop that used black powder and packed a punch. Did anyone else make tennis ball cannons with tin cans, duct tape and lighter fluid? Ah the good old days. I would hate to be a child in this modern day.
And yes sadly I had pin striped bell bottoms at one point, that I don't miss.

it was so friken loud,you just had to do it again.

We used to get 2 large 3/4" bolts and one nut. Screw the nut on one bolt about a third of the way of the nut. Filled the cavity with shaved match heads. Screwed the other bolt on semi tight. Then throw the thing in the air on the road and if you were lucky it would land on end and go off with a big bang. Little things like this would amuse us for hours.
Even Down Under we did the feeding on of cut forks onto the forks of your bike to get that chopper look. Too bad if you made them too long the front would be so light you hardly had any steering. Understeered into object many times.

We did the same thing with spark plugs. Unscrew the post, tie one end of a string to it and tie the other end to the electrode. Put the match heads in the hole where the post came out, jam the post back in and swing the plug like a pendulum against a brick wall.
Sounded like a .22 rifle going off...lol....hadn't thought of that in years.

We used to have battles with chunks of red clay and firecrackers.

After the fields were freshly plowed, we would make two teams of kids. Each team would use dirt and build a fort, and stockpile the smaller chunks of red clay for ammo.

We would take a 1/2" or so drill bit and make a hole in the chunk of red clay by hand. We'd twist three firecracker fuses together, and stick them into the hole. The hole was snug so the firecrackers wouldn't fall out. Then one person would light the fuse while the other would throw. The objective was to get the "bomb" to blow up right above the opponent's fort, so timing was critical.

We would come home covered in red dirt. It was fun.

We had many a bottle rocket wars. When I was little I had a cap musket that would "supposedly" fire a cork ball with the energy from a cap. That didn't work well but that musket was great for aiming/shooting bottle rockets. Light the bottle rocket and drop it in like a mortar and point and "shoot"

You weren't jumping ramps on bikes unless you were laying down under the ramp as the bike goes over. Measure out 4 people's worth and lay down and you're possibly going to be landed on. You had to keep on eye on the speed of the rider, though--and be ready to scoot really fast.

Anything beyond adding two sets becomes near impossible to ride or steer as a kid because you have to alternate them in curve (one set going up, one set down). But if you go to a swing set and take the cross bars off, saw off one end to insert on the end of your forks, you can use the hole on the other end for the bike's axle and chop the heck out of it. It's gets pretty sloppy sometimes.

Didn't have a needle to fill up a flat football with the tire pump. Got the tip of an oil can to go in the opening, but no way to attach the tire pump fitting. Took the tip off of dad's propane torch and filled up the football. We got done playing and decided to let the propane out an light it. Stand on the football and you have a nice mini flame thrower. Let's use the flame to light off some bottle rockets too. Town cop saw us and came running. We ran around the garage, went in the back door, and hid under the 68 Catalina until the cop went away.

We would make cannons / bazooka's or some people call them potato guns. Tape together 4 or 5 soup cans with the tops and bottoms cut out, one solid can at the bottom with a bunch of holes in one end and one hole in the side. Give it a shot of lighter fluid and swing it around so it atomized in the barrel. Stuff a tennis ball down the barrel and put a match to it. A very formidable weapon when your 12 yo. Form up teams and try not to get nailed

Reading some of these comments, it sounds like we were a bunch of "pyros" growing up
