Any "REAL" resto guy worth his salt can remove that section of frame with a spot weld remover ( goes on a drill) get the new frame section, flange the end towards the front, drill holes where the welds were, use a spot weld adapter for a mig welder ( 30 bucks from eastwood) and weld up those holes and the seam and finish it like it was new. Will need spring off though on that side, may want to start spraying some nuts. I have done this on a 4 post lift and wore some rust but the job came out nice. Maybe a welding, fab shop would be more inclined to tackle it than a body, or resto shop though.

Started working on the car today after being away on a trip. Attempted to get her registered since the forms from Customs finally showed up. Of course once I got there, the DMV lady said I have to contact their headquarters on Monday, since the car is coming from a foreign country. (Of course that advice was completely different from what they told me the last time I was there a couple weeks ago when they said I needed the Customs form to complete the paperwork package.)

I replaced the leaky valve cover gasket and got the horns working (it was a disconnected wire at the relay - solved that one pretty easily). Click on the photo to hear how she sounds at the moment.

Default Part two......

Steve, call your local dmv back on Monday and ask to speak to the manager of the branch. Tell them what you have as far as Customs paperwork and the registration which is also the title. All the customs paperwork is for is to determine how much state tax you are going to pay. Sounds like the person who helped you has no idea what she is doing. Brian.

In today's "Give A Mouse A Cookie" update, it all started this morning with me taking the rear seat out to fix some of the wrinkles in the seat cover. I pulled the back seat and set it in the 80 degree sun for an hour to soften up. Since I wasn't just going to sit around for the hour, I pulled the other seats out...and then the carpet...etc.

Anyway, I had a bag of hog rings so I adjusted and pulled and remounted all the new seat covers till 90% of the wrinkles were gone. They must have been installed in the Canadian winter and ended up being too loose on the seat foams. It worked out very well in the end.

The upright cushions are done, the ones lieing flat are warming up.

And while all the seats were warming up I pulled the carpet out to see what the floors looked like. All the original tar paper insulation was in place and actually very pliable and sticky (a real mess actually). Sitting in the sun the stuff was just as tacky as the day it was installed 40 years ago.

I wanted to examine the floorboards so I started carefully pealing with a plastic putty knife and got all of the tar paper insulation up. The car was originally rust proofed when it was new and it looks like they lifted the carpet and slathered the tar paper with extra cosmoline or some other goop and it pretty much saved the floors but it left a black tar mess in places. Here is what it looked like after a few hours of peeling:

And look what arrived yesterday:

I ordered a reproduction of the original owner's license plate from these guys: http://www.licenseplates.tv/

It turns out that the CWT-160 plate number that was listed on all of the car's dealership repair orders was in a unique 3-letter/3-number sequence that started in 1973 in Ontario. So it looks like that is as close as the original day-one plate as I am going to get.

Very cool!

Are the carpet & seats going back in or are you continuing from here?

I'm putting in new tar paper insulation and carpet. The old carpet was a replacement and it wasn't trimmed properly when installed. Plus it smelled oily from the rust proofing goo. The head liner needs to be replaced as it is the wrong material and was most likely done when they installed the new GM quarters back in the 1980s.

It will not show once installed, the Eastwood stuff works so well, really cuts the noise and driveline heat. I used a tiny pizza roller to really flatten it before carpeting. I also used the good silver tape to cover areas where seams were. If your gonna keep it/drive it, its something to consider..Its far from original obviously, but not noticeable. Also makes the radio sound much better ( rear speakers) Its just an FYI..Love your car ! Its nice to see someone else spreading out the mess like I used too!!

Did you just buy the standard kit from them that says it will cover about 33 sq ft? I was thinking of putting this on the roof and in the doors as well. Also, do you just put the carpet directly over this, or still use an under lay?
Thanks

The car made it through customs fine and the delivery truck is supposedly coming here tonight. I will update you all as soon as I have the car.....

Hey..Steve..nexttime yah paint those grills..just get some poster paper..Trace the back side and then trim it a lil smaller and place it on the front of the grate..No taping or nothing........
