A few years later, I picked up a 74 Pontiac shop manual that had a supplement that listed the engine code. I was able to verify the VIN number stamp in the block matched the PHS after I bought it. It was a one owner car. The owner had a farm with about a 1/2 mile dirt road, so any oil film on the motor became a paste. I didn't find the engine code until I got it home and cleaned the motor.
