Hood Weight ??
Hey guys,
Need a little help. Does anybody know the weight of stock hood, including hinges and latch? I will be replacing a stock hood with a pin-on fiberglass hood soon. This is a strip only car, and I am going to get it on the scales later this week. As we try to get the weight distribution set, I need to know what weight savings I am looking at with the fiberglass pin-on replacement. Thanks for any help/advice you got |

I will be able to tell you early next week, I am shipping a 74 GTO hood with latch but no hinges, the packaging shoul cancle out the weight of the hinges.

I'm working on one right now at the house and I'd say without the hinges, just a bare hood, would be in the 40-45lb range? Hinges would be in the 3-5 lbb range and the latch is minimal.

There not as heavy as you would think but still heavy enough! It all added up, especially on the front of the car!

Sorry to see you don't have the specific numbers yet. Hoods weigh a ton! When I disassembled the front clip of my 77 (same hood & hinges) I weighed everything. I'll either find the measurements or drag the scale out in the garage because all the pieces are just laying there. Unless someone beats me to the punch :-)

Weights I have from changes to my car:
50 pounds going from stock hood to fiberglass pin on with glassed in shaker. 50 lbs dropped by going to a pin on decklid. 50 lbs dropped by installing glass bumpers. 70 lbs dropped by modifying a stock set of doors for lexan. 65 lbs tubing the front subframe and converting to a manual rack. Those are the only "big ticket" weight loss items, the rest are 1-20lb changes that add up over time and take work to get out of the car. |

Just to follow up, I get a tad over 11 lbs for the pair of hood hinges.

The shipping weight for shipping the 74 GTO hood, no hinges but with the front hood release was 68lbs, that included alot of packaging.

'weighing' in one last time...
Had the joy of schlepping the hood out of the garage this weekend, and took a detour to the scale while I was at it. The weight of the hood is 48.2 lbs (average of a couple of measurements). Hopefully this is useful.
I guess it feels like a lot more weight because it's so cumbersome to move (and I've got long arms!) |
