Yes - usually plant trials and unusual engineering builds took place at the home plant (Pontiac, Michigan in this case), and normally early in the model year. So - I tend to figure these things are "intentional" if they are present on a vehicle like that.

Fremont - in general - tended to be a little more "loosey goosey", due to their distance from home base (and being in the middle of the drug/hippy culture). Oddities from Fremont I tend to chalk up as mistakes or deliberate defiance of official engineering direction.

Not always - but that's my starting point, until some piece of data causes me to think otherwise.

Since there were no (good) photos of this car I asked Eric to create a "hero card" so that I would have something to refer back to upon occasion. In an attempt to be as accurate as possible we referenced the video and the one still photo, paying attention to decal placement, mirror location, emblem removal, etc.

Of note here is the Royal Bobcat paint scheme that Mr Wangers developed for the '63 cars, including silver around the front grill openings, along the side trim, around the decklid and the blue paintwork on the wheels and center caps.

Today marks the start of my 33rd year with General Motors; It was 33 years ago today I walked through the doors at Chevrolet Flint Assembly and the rest, as they say, is history (...except the stuff that hasn't happened yet. That wouldn't be history - lol).

So - I celebrated by going to the Widetrackers Dustoff yesterday. Beautiful weather and lots of nice cars.

First time in many years that it did not rain during the event. I had been waiting to do this, so it was my first opportunity to display the GTO hooked to the Grand Prix by using the old towbar. My brother in law also brought the Lemans convertible down making it the first time all the family Pontiacs had been in the same place since dad passed away.

Did you tow the GTO or just display it that way. If towed i'm sure you got a lot of looks and a few people thinking WTH.

No - I trailered the GTO and my daughter drove the GP. I hooked 'em up at the Fairgrounds and then drove around a bit to get to the show field.

Talked to an ex line supervisor from the Atalanta plant who worked there in the late 60's and he said line workers would make mistakes on purpose in order to stop the line.

Fall means September, which is when a bunch of birthdays happen in my family including Dad's, my sister - and the GTO.

It was 48 years ago this month when Dad and I headed down to Royal to pick the car up. We've had a couple small outings, in the spirit of celebration -

My wife needed to go to the bank so (since I knew I had a captive audience) I busted the old goat out to run into town:



We also had a little local church car show last weekend and Eric White (gtoric) convinced me to bring one of the cars out for display. The GTO got called upon for that one, too, since it was so close by.



There was a guy there with a newly purchased black '73 Laguna so during the course of the conversation he convinced me that I should bring mine as well. I ran back to the house (...literally - like a mile, on foot...) and drove back in the Chevelle.

One of the visitors said "hey, that's pretty cool that you were able to find a drawing that's just like your car...." - lol.














All in all I think there were just over 100 cars on the property. Pretty nice representation of Pontiacs, many of whom are in the Widetrackers Chapter of the POCI.

Awesome, Keith! So when you drove home, did you drive one car fifty yards, park, run back to the other and drive it a hundred yards, park, run back, drive the other car ... repeating as needed until you got back to the garage?

LOL. No - I cheated and enlisted a shuttle driver.

They had a garage sale at the show as well, so the ladies were more than happy to oblige.

Thanks again Keith for the info and pics.I reread some of the story again. Like your 63 GP. I had one in 70-71 era. Light blue 4spd car. No power-std steering,brakes,radio,I just couldn't figure a GP with std access.The previous owner installed an alum. rear bumper-yes it was with no backup lights. Thansk again Bob

That bumper would be worth a fortune, today.
