Sell anything lately?
Why do people think they are doing you a favor offering you CASH? Do they think you'll be accepting some other form of payment? I sold the last of my old lawn tractors last week & one guy kept asking/repeating over & over - CASH "I'm talking COLD HARD CASH" he says. Finally I had to tell him I ain't taking no credit cards and swapping services with his ole' lady just wasn't appealing to me (honestly I never saw her or him for that matter - it was all over the phone). It's being sold for cash, always cash, nothing but cash, so cash it is!

I guess some people feel that in a world of checks, credit/debit cards and online transfers, people will get excited about seeing lump sums of cold hard cash waved in there face. Worked for us 3 weeks ago thanks to your buddy Dan.

Hahaha...no duh over the phone?! Always flash the cash in person on a sale! Especially a bigger item. Only time I ask on the phone for cash discount is when I am buying goods/services. Bought two 8" maple trees this spring and had em spayed in....cash deal...and had my attic blown in insulation last year, same deal. Stuff like that I get pretty good cash deals on.

I too won't accept anything but cash. People ask if I will hold an item for them and I tell them the only thing I will be holding is the cash for the item when I sell it. I also hate when people always give an offer over the phone or by tex and have never seen the item.

Cash for me, buy or sell.
When I buy I ask for the seller's best price. IF good enough I take it and if not I walk. Sometimes I counter offer but usually it doesn't go far. (so you have to be ready to walk. If you really need it you just go for it...) When I sell I ask a bit more than I would like, since everyone wants to "win" the deal. But if it's a rare or desirable part I price it right to begin with, maybe a little high to start but if it's not way out of the ballpark it sells. So now you know how to buy from me.....Just don't ask about the 4 speed cars... |

This weekend I got a call for a clothes dryer we have on Craigslist. Guy calls up, asks about the dryer, I give him the model number, price, etc., and he says "will you take less?"
I say "Maybe, but I don't deal over the phone. If you want to deal, show up with cash in hand and we'll talk." The fool says "That's unacceptabler to me. I have to know the price before I drive 30 miles." I say "I guess you won't be buying this dryer, then. Thanks for calling." I get, "wait, wait. My wife really likes that brand of dryer. I really would like to buy it if the prices is right. How much will you take?" I go through the same set of parameters as above. Now he's getting angry. "I can't understand why you won't name a price." I say "You have to show up with U.S. currency in hand and be ready to pay me on the spot if we strike a deal." (Click!) People are idiots.

Offers of cash do work to possibly have a lower price in some instances. Usually service related. I offered cash to a tree removal company a few years ago, they dropped the price about $600 bucks (it was for about 11 big trees). Yes, I know they probably never reported this as income to the IRS, which is why a lower cash price is attractive.
But this doesn't make sense when buying / selling items through CR or similar though. It should almost always be cash.

When dealing on a car at a dealer, a cash offer is not always the best way. Then they know they won't make anyrthing in finance. Plus a lot of people don't realize that dealer gets paid in full in a day or two anyway.

I'm guessing it's strictly conditioning with those folks based on cash sales aren't reported to the IRS nor for state sales tax.
Plus it worked when Daddy used to say it.....................

It has to be the mindset - if you buy 99.95% of everything you own at a big box store then you must think that when you buy something privately CASH will have a big impact. But if you buy/sell a lot of items privately - you know it has no bearings - it's going to be cash.
From a business standpoint I can see where it may have an impact trading cash for services, not having to pay taxes, workman's comp etc for the revenue. Although I wouldn't know as I've never been offered or taken cash for services while I've owned my construction company.

How much would you knock off the price of a 30x40 garage if you were offered cash Chris?

Nothing Pat, sorry, have to run everything through the books.
![]() Although I have heard that some guys will give 10% and sometimes up to 20% if they are looking to pick up a car or something like that. ![]() It would also depend on what the margin was on the project and how good of a friend you were....from what I hear.

Old timers say "cash money".
I like the people who try to dicker you down because so-and-so has one for less money. I just tell them that sounds like a good deal and probably the one to buy. I'm not hurting for money and I'll wait for my price. |

When selling/buying something on CL, swapmeets, yard sales etc obviously it's going to be a cash transaction. There are times however when "cash is king". There is a huge influx of Chinese immigrants coming into my area. When houses come up for sale they will show up with shopping bags full of cash. A friend of mine sold a 4 family house to the Chinese, they offered him an extra $100,000 cash if he could get rid of the tenants before the sale. The Russians also buy houses with cash in my area.

It has become worse since that TV show Pawn Stars became popular. Seems like everyone fancies themselves a negotiating expert and will give you "cash money right now"...LMFAO.

I always carry plenty of cash with me for those unexpected ocassions that I find something I want. I love to negotiate and think I am pretty good at it. I dont talk cash I show cash.
