My 65 LeMans Coupe has lap belts in front but not in the rear. When I removed the bench seat in back there was no mounting points that I could see for them. Was rear lap belts an option?

Rudy,
As best I could find, rear seat belts were not an option. I bought a 65 GTO convertible last year and did a lot of research to upgrade the seat belt system. I installed a modern retractable 3 point system for the fronts and standard belts in the back seat. I found that the metal panel holding the back seat back panel already had openings formed in the metal frame that mysteriously match openings for the best placement for seat belts. So they were at least thinking about rear belts back then. I bought standard rear belt sets from Andover Restraints (andoauto.com). Just make sure you order the 60" length, not the 74".If you are a purist, the latches don't match original. You need to drill 4 holes in the floorpan for the attachment bolts. I also bought 4 of Andover's thick metal rectangular reinforcement plates. The reinforcement plates look like they provide a much better and safer connection than the standard front seat single welded nut. Once you take out all the back seat stuff, installation is not really difficult. Hope this helps |

My 65 Le Mans has rear seatbelts. Found them when I pulled the rear bench. Not sure if they were original, but they match the front belts exactly and look original.

I would think rear seat belts were available in 1965...I know they were available as options at least as back as 1961. I put belts in my '61 Bonneville (since it didn't come with them), and after doing some research I found out the factory put little dimples in the floor pan to show where to drill the holes for the retaining bolts.
They were pretty subtle, so I had to look for them for a while - check your car, they probably did the same thing. |

I'll have to eat a little crow. Found the "65 Pontiac Accessorizer" booklet that listed factory options and dealer installed options. GM publication "9-64 SP1967", whatever that means. It shows rear seat belts were a dealer installed option. Part # 984496-984506 depending on color and "Custom vs Standard" grade. Cost $5.75 plus dealer installation charges. |

Can you provide any info on what you used for your front 3-pt retractable belts? I'm wanting to do that for my 64 hardtop but havn't found anything real encouraging. Eastwood has some new 3-pt's anyone have experience with them or any others out there? |

Its been awhile since checking this post. I have a big file downstairs with Andover part #s, specs. etc. I wanted to make a decent article on the seatbelts but the camera screwed up. Since you have a hardtop, your problems are easier to solve than if you had a convertible. Let me know if you or anyone else needs the info. Start with Andover's website: www.andoauto.com. They have a lot of info on mounting options, specs, details and prices. |

HenryGriffith...thanks for all the info...checked out the Andover site but i'm still not clear on the attachment for the shoulder part of the harness. My 64 is the coupe (no post between front and quarter window) so it would be like the convertible as far as mounting point for the shoulder harness? How much cutting did you do on the rear interior panel? Does it hinder access to the rear seat? Do you have any pix? Thanks again.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Has anyone recently installed modern 3 point belts in the rear of an 67 A body lately with pics? Looking to do a safety upgrade using Andover restraints. Thank you.

Don't know what year car you have. but my 65 has very light stamp marks in the rear floor where the factory had stamped the mounting position for the floor plates like the 67 uses for there rear seat belts. These stamp marks also have the punch mark for the punching for holes or spot welds. You may look for them on your car . But if your car is undercoated or dirty you may not see this so well. I will post picture.You will have to make a plate to reinforce the floor to keep the bolt from ripping through. I event you drum brakes fade out and you wreck.
