Is #10 Rick's red convertible or is that a different one?

Rick's was bought at Carlisle with the wrong motor in it in the low teens I believe, had been for sale for quite some time and all that was needed was the right person to look at the late date on the cowl and to call Jim Mattison.

That's similar to the car that I posted about in another RAII thread, but I think it's a different one. The one I know of is owned by Mike R in Ohio. Sold new and sponsored by Wells Pontiac (same dealership that sold my roundport 70 GTO) of Richmond, Indiana. Raced by the Frame Brothers. Special paint red. Said to be delivered late June 1968. Radio, heater, and seam sealer delete. Original engine grenaded; may have had a shivverlay motor in it when purchased in the 70's by current owner. Had been painted black at that point. Had 1000 miles on it when purchased, now has 1700. Last I heard, Mike was collecting parts for the restoration.

I have not seen the car or the documentation, but Mike said he has a build sheet.

Mr. Mino sold one of his autumn bronze birds to Kevin Suydam in Seattle a few years ago or more. There are pictures of it on Kevin's website.

Also, on youtube there are clips of Mino racing an April Gold RAII bird back in the late 80s. Was this a real RAII as well and if so, where is that one?

Most of the ones on the list were compiled by Joe-ramair2.
Sooner or later maybe he'll get back in here.
Sounds like #10 - and the one you're describing - are 2 different cars ?
Hopefully its a new addition to the list.

How long ago did the Rick/Carlisle car transpire ?
#10 was on the list from 5-6 years ago.

Hey Scott,
It sounds WAY to similar not to be the same car.
Maybe that guy sold it ? Or we have some names wrong ?

#5 showed up at 2010 POCI fully restored.
There is a thread with pictures and brief decsriptions mentioned.

I'll update the listing/info any time it is necessary
new additions
corrections
etc....

Thanks for that update on one of the Bronze cars !

Mino built couple/few clones over the years - possibly that April Gold was one of them ?
He only specified his 2 Bronze cars as being genuine.
Once in a while he checks in on us - maybe he'll be back before long.

I'll update a Bronze one belonging to Kevin now, in my file.
Will post the update version next time.

That "MIGHT" actually be car #11.
It's one from Joe-ramair2's original list.
Obviously very little / too little info was given on that car.
when Joe checks back in - maybe he can confirm.

Is there anyway possible you could get any additional details ?
Is it 4spd or Auto ? Interior / top colors ?
Build date ? PHS ? picture ? anything ?
Not trying to pinpoint owner or location - just the car itself.

Have been reluctant to add any hear-say type cars to the list.
Several of those have popped in and out with little to no info or details.
I trust your word and knowledge, but more details will keep cars from getting confused or double counted. Or from not being counted at all.

I'm trying to keep it as accurate as possible.

Thanks H-I-S

Different car. Just got off the phone with the owner, Mike R. Mike still has his; hasn't done anything with it. His is optioned a bit differently - - RAII, 4 sp, hood tach, gauges, black standard interior, tinted glass. Said it was delivered w/o heater, radio, seam sealer, only had one horn, no carpet pad.

Special order paint - Solar Red. Apparently documents say, "ship one extra quart of paint with the car" or something like that.

Fully documented by PHS, and he also has a build sheet and a chassis sheet (not familiar with these, but said it's dated 6 June 1968). He's out of town for a few weeks, but said he could send copies of the documents when he returns.

Apparently Jim Mattison has looked at his car; must have caught his attention when Mike ordered the PHS documents.

Thanks for checking into that Scott ,
and thanks for the further defining details too !

Amazing the similarities those 2 have in common.
The DELETES and special order color etc ...
both built to race , and both low miles

This one is definitely ready to add to the list.
Thanks Man

FWIW...

JM has a personal list of every '68 F RAII.

I called him years ago when I was doing the Firebird Registry and told him of a guy in NY who contacted me about his brothers original RAII 'Bird. Before I even provided more info, JM gave me a description & details.. Owner had not yet even publicized the car yet or contacted JM. Of course, JM wanted me to give him the owner info (not).

So, maybe contact JM and he'll gladly provide his list.

30 years ago i did a 50 state vin search and a friend that could do the look up by the insurance files or something said the car had never been registered in any state. jim gave me the info on the car back in 1990 or 91. i just cant imagine what could have happened to it. the engine was complete from carb to exhaust manifolds.

I saw this thread & decided to list the RA II Firebirds ("clones" & originals) that I have owned:

#1- RAII/4-spd CLONE- April Gold/black std. interior (orig 400/auto) restored & raced in the Supercar showdowns 1986 to 1990- fastest entry in every race entered (12.16-114 best), converted back to stock & sold locally.

#2-RAII/4-spd CLONE- Mairfair maize/black deluxe interior (orig 400/auto) restored & raced in NMCA factory stock in the 90's- '93 stock eliminator & record holder (12.20- 114 best), converted to RAII/auto & sold- became R. Mahoney's race car (now re-painted aqua) & believed to be sold again.

#3- RAII/4-spd CLONE- Starlight black/black deluxe interior (orig 400HO/auto) restored & raced in NMCA factory stock in the 90's- fastest entry entire 96 season (12.06-115 best), sold less engine- was T. Goodmans pure stock racer (w/auto trans) now owned by R. Watson and still raced in pure stock.

#4- RAII/4-spd ORIGINAL (PHS doc)- Autumn bronze/black std int, restored & sold, now in K. Sudams collection.

#5- RAII/4-spd ORIGINAL (PHS doc)- Autum bronze/black std int, restored & currently raced as a pure stock (11.75-119 best), still owned.

#6- RAII/auto-ORIGINAL (PHS doc)- Cameo white/black std int, bench seat, column shift, radio delete car originally purchased by a dealership in Ohio & raced in 1968- this is the FIRST RAII built & one of only 12 auto's, currently being restored by a well known professional shop, still owned.

Cool info Jim.
Thanks for bringing us back up to speed on your cars and conquests.
You Rock , Man !

Someone asked me in another thread a few days ago -
If didn't Knafel have a 68 Bird (maybe Ram2 ?).

I couldn't even remember for sure Knafel having a 68 Bird Tin Indian - this week.
Remembered immediately when i saw the pics again last night. (non-selective memory)
We had a brief pow-wow on here about it years ago - very little known about it to us around here.

Don't even know if it was D-port or Round port.
Just "guessing" it was an earlier D-Port since it doesn't seem to have a big race history compared to the Ram2 GTO they raced. just dunno

Is this the car from Ohio Dealer that you have, that is being restored now ?
If it is , or isn't , do you know any details about this Bird ?
It appears it was a White body with Black interior.

From SteveD400 (Steve Hoog) website:

Alright, here is one that fell through the cracks! This 1968 Firebird was raced out of Knafel Pontiac as a Tin Indian.

Some how through the course of time the history of this car fell into a black hole. The story and pictures are provided by John Watson formally of Akron; John’s brother Tom bought this car from Knafel after the race season and it was to never be heard from again until John contacted me October of 2007.

Apparently this Green and White 1968 Firebird was raced; and the Red and Silver 1967 Firebird may have been a show piece.

Knafel raced the green and white Firebird. I've never seen a picture of the red and white Knafel Bird being raced.
