the 67 was Silver and Bronze (looks bronze to me anyway)
Some call it Silver & Red - some Silver & Orange

Guess it could get called anything and it would be okay
so long as folks know you mean the 67 Tin Indian Knafel Bird.

I don't doubt you, but I wonder if the one I'm thinking of was really from IA? I'd have to ask my friend. I believe he told me the same dealership later ordered a SD 455 T/A in primer, but I could be mixing up two stories.

From what I was told from the original owner, the car from Iowa was black with a turquoise painted top. Definitely a R/A II, column shift automatic.

Has it surfaced?

Hmmm...well, we're comparing die-casts here, not the real car. Maybe they made a few different runs of the die-cast, but I was always under the impression it was red with an off-white.



I think some of the confusion may be that there was a 67 and a 68 Knafel Firebird. The only color photo I've seen of the 68 version was green and white, while the b&w photo of the 68 that everyone has seen is the one where it's sitting on the showroom floor, and it's missing the parking lights.

maybe a lil orange'r looking due to light/angle.

I had a color shot of the real 67 Knafel Bird - bit its on a crashed box.
Will work on finding something if i can.

i posted 2 color shots of the 68 White Green Gold Knafel Bird , De-Lettered.

If you notice on the nose of the 68 version sitting on their showroom, the AMT sticker is covered up. It's the rectangular spot on the front fender, just below the Firebird script. AMT made a model of the Knafel Bird. Not an exact replica obviously, but they sponsored the car. And darn it, that looks red too.

Also noticed that on Steve's webpage, he states, "Apparently this Green and White 1968 Firebird was raced; and the Red and Silver 1967 Firebird may have been a show piece."

Not to distract from the RAII thread, but the Knafel 67/68 FB confusion was in part due to Knafel.

Bill put out 2 different lists of the cars.
One list did not have a 67 FB listed, only the 68. This stated the 68 was a paint and show car.
Another list stated a 67 FB only as a paint and show car. No mention of a 68. (That has to be the list Steve has on his site.

The Knafel ad for the 68 1/2 shows the 67 FB.
Being the 68 FB pictures show a round driver mirror, which points to a very early car. You would think that the 68 would have been ready and used in a 68 1/2 ad.

The AMT model is listed as a 68 on the cover with no wing windows, but it is a 67 body.



I figured for the longest time that there was only one car and the 68 was the 67 with marker lights and door modifications.

Also the Towne Pontiac "Ram-Bunctious" 1968 RAII Firebird out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, red with black interior. Not sure if that one was discussed in this thread, but I didn't see a reference to it in BVZ's list.

All i had on the Towne car is this small B&W promo that blurrs too quickly.

i posted/mentioned about it in the GTO thread .. oops
will get it on this list - with tonights update.
The other Red car from Scott's source, Mino's White Automatic, Knafel MIA, Towne MIA.

Steve Hoog was in contact with the brother of the guy who bought the 68 from Knafel.
It never got mentioned - that i can recall or find in any posts - whether it was 4 spd or Automatic. Would be extra cool if its the car that Mino is restoring.

I just confirmed this is the car I thought was from MI but it's from IA. Chances are it's the same car that OPh was thinking of, which begs the question: Did he get the color combo wrong? Or is there another two-tone RAII car out there?

Just confirmed with the former owner, the R/A II Firebird I referenced above was indeed black with a turquoise painted top. He has the original paperwork somewhere in his files, but he's yet to locate it.

In fact, he and his buddy ordered two Ram Air Firebirds on the same day. His buddy's four speed came in about two weeks before his and it was a d-port motor. His came a bit later and was equipped with the R/A II. He had no clue what it was and it ran about as we'll as his buddy's d-port engine. It wasn't until he added deeper gears that he could outrun it.

Diego, that's a good point. It's unlikely there were two of them delivered to Iowa but it's certainly possible.
