San Antonio, Austin or Corpus Christi. Galveston is OK. Not a big city and may still be under renovation since the last hurricane.
A story about Galveston..... The wife and I wanted to go visit there. Seems that weekend there was something going on making it hard to get a hotel room. She called ahead to book a room. After finding a place, she asked that we got a room with a view of the ocean. They told her they would see what they could do. When we got there, there were NO rooms facing the ocean at that hotel. I figure that's why she was able to book a room with them. Wasn't a bad weekend though. There was a big air show that weekend across the bay in Houston. Spent the day watching the airshow and then enjoyed a quiet walk along the beach that evening.

Ft. Worth born and Houston bred, but for my money it's the Hill Country!
Look up stuff in and around Boerne, Fredericksberg, Kerville, Bandera, etc. Lost Maples State Park will be GORGEOUS this time of year . . .

Well,FYI just so you know,Nov 16-18 is going to be a madhouse here around Austin,as that's F1 weekend,so it'll probably be real hard to find any reasonable hotel rooms here that weekend.
But yeah, lots to do most any weekend no matter where you end up going. Often it's easier to tell us when and where and then we can make recommendations. For BBQ I'd say you gotta hit Lockhart/Elgin area to get some of the "best of the best". San Antonio is always has lots to do. Good time to come too, weathers cooled off some and it's starting to get real nice out. Hope you enjoy the trip! Bret P. |

My wife and I are flying down to San Antonio next Sat. 10/27 for 3 days. I'm surprising her for her birthday. I'll give you my unbiased review when we get back.

As several have said, the Hill Country around Austin/San Antonio corridore is very nice. Might be easier to get rooms in San Antonio around Sea World, Six Flags or the river walk. Austin's just 90 minutes north from there unless you take the new 85mph toll road!

Spent a night in Pecos Texas once, I see no need to go to West Texas ever again.

Texas is a great state, I've lived here all my life. Lotsa neat cities but for someone coming for a first time visit I would agree with others...Austin/San Antonio/hill country area. That area is the prettiest in the state and plenty to see and do.
