Hi,

I want to install my quarter window vertical chrome strips. Install of the weather strip into the chrome piece is not in question. I have new rubber, and the chrome pieces are good. I searched this forum, and found no previous answer.

On attaching the chrome to the window: It looks like there was some kind of butyl tape or something in the channel to bind it to the glass. It had never been previously removed from the car, and was obviously factory.

What did you guys use to attach the strip to the windows? I thought about weatherstrip adhesive, but wasn't sure if this would pose problems I haven't imagined yet. Concours judging won't be a concern for me. Clean functionality will be.

It's called chanell packing. It's a tarpaper/rubber like substance. Most professionals do not use packing in friction fit applications. Black silicone is the choosen method, and also an equivilant as for doing it according to the book. (They use urethance also, but it's because there is a tube of it sitting in the gun, not because it works better.) Make sure that you have it positioned correctly and secured as the silicone sets up.

Thanks for the reply. So you are saying the common adhesion method is a urethane weatherstrip adhesive black goo? Is it the same stuff used for windshields, or the stuff that is typically used in a weatherstrip channel to glue in a rubber strip (i.e., trunk channel)?

Silicone is petty much sillycone when using it as adhesive. Black would be best because the packing is also black. Dry set it a few times to determine the amount of gap between the glass and track. If I recall, the gap is miminual, so it will be hard to tell the difference between bonded and packing.

I know that some people insist that packing is used. Myself, I never used packing, and I'm not about to start now. The thing is that with packing it's a crap's shoot whether or not it will stay on, while silicone is 100% positive bond.

Hands down the urethane for glass setting is better than any silicone.
3M 6890 is a good one.
Use tape to hold in place until it cures.

Glass channel setting tape is what i use , have some if needed . Urethane does not stick to bare glass , only glass that has black factory applied coating will it stick to .

When I disassembled mine it appeared to me that the packing was not only on the edge but also on the sides within the trim piece channel. So I used a tiny bead of black 3M weather stripping on the edge of the glass only and then a bicycle tube within the channel. Just tap it on, it's nice and snug, then trim the rubber and you're done. It just seemed like it would be much more uniform than trying to apply adhesive within the edge and sides as well. It's definitely a friction fit and is not going anywhere.

Quicksilver - interesting tip. I tried the weatherstrip adhesive today without any rubber, etc. It made a nice mess, and caused me a lot of extra work cleaning it all out.

Various camaro places seem to be selling the glass channel strips, so I will look for something there. I tried our host, no joy.
