Honestly there isnt much around Ft Hood. The nice part is its close to Austin and about 100 miles from Dallas Fort Worth or San Antonio. Enjoy your trip

Enjoy, as Texas can be fun that time of year. Just watch out for ice covered roads.

If I were you I would explore the Hill country.....It isn't all that far from
Fort Hood. I would go to Belton, then head south on I35 to Austin and check out the Texas Capitol building, which is just two blocks west of I35 in downtown Austin. After that, get back on I35 and go south and take the Highway 290 exit and go west on 290 till you get to Highway 12 and take a left on 12 going south and in ten minutes you will be in the little hill country town of Wimberley, with all kinds of cute shops with things for sale you'll never see anywhere else....a great place to go Christmas shopping. If you have more time, take 12 north back to 290 and continue west towards Fredericksburg, a German town with 4 blocks of cool gift shops on the main 290 drag through town. If you have time, on the way to Fredericksburg on 290 you will be passing right by the LBJ Ranch located on 290 halfway between Johnson City and Fredericksburg. They have daily ranch tours you can take. If you have time after Fredericksburg, go north out of Fredericksburg about twenty miles and you will come to Enchanted Rock......If you never see anything else in Texas you've got to see this.....simply amazing! Google Enchanted Rock for more info. Another really cool town you would enjoy checking out is New Braunfels, about an hour south of Austin on 35. |

Thanks for the input. We will be there for about 5 days. Not sure how much time my son will have off but sounds like we'll have some driving to do anything.
gtohurstjudge, Thanks for the travel tips talked to the wife & we are going to try and make that drive. Craig |
