Paul,

It amazing to me, after seeing the oil pump photos, how many guys will not take the time to inspect an oil pump BEFORE installing it. They just throw them in, prime the engine then wonder WHY they have problems. Are you sure you didn't spend time with Bud Brown (my mentor)?

Pump in the clone engine is a melling, it was the 3rd I sourced, the other two the gears were different heights. The one I used ended up having to have the gears clearance, but certainly better than the first two. Luckily, the relief is a plunger type, just have to knock the burrs off the cup. (I shimmed it slightly too). The first one wasn't even in a bag, just tossed straight into the box! (Probably happened in the parts store, maybe even a return)

Awesome history & story on the GTO by the way, love it!

What's funny is some are like this, and some aren't. Yesterday, we were looking at a Melling Performance Ford 460 pump and it was fine on the mounting foot. They even cut a relief in so the head of the bolt would clear the body. They must just have bad molds at times and those batch's need work, while other sets of molds are fine.

This is why we never just bolt on a pump without tearing it completely apart and going through it.

Unfortunately, I have never met Bud. Sounds like a great guy.

He was, Paul. He was demanding, uncompromising and believed in building engines CORRECTLY the first time. To my knowledge, Bud had ONE warranty in over 50 yrs of building engines of all types.

Well it's been awhile but we are after it again! Been working on it here and there but not much to report on..... until now that is! Finally got the car moved over to the spray booth and going to clean, sand and mask in preparation for primer. Plan is to get first coat in this next weekend.
Here the car sits in the prep area.

Finally got the car in primer and going to block this coming Sunday. Wow what a lot of work. I wiped down then sanded the epoxy for around 4hrs during the week. Mike and I cleaned, touched up the sanding job, masked then sprayed 4 coats of Spies 5310 primer, about 1.25 gallons. Took about 10 hrs! Lot of breaks though, watched my son wrestle in the Michigan state open on the interweb. Preped the hood, deck lid and valance today and will prime tomorrow.
I can see the light at the end if the tunnel, well as far as paint goes that is!

Thanks for that info. I just called them and they are closed til the 6th of Jan. Someone had mentioned that they covered the glove box doors as well. I did not send them mine as I will dye it myself. I called them and did verify that they do indeed cover the door. Not how I would want it done.

It would be nice to have a door covered with vinyl as it would eliminate the crumbling
plastic problem, but if that was done the outer edge of the door would have to be trimmed back or it would not fit in the hole in the dash in my opinion. The fit on those glove box doors
is very tight to the opening....no room for a layer of extra vinyl on the edge.

The door I have is in perfect condition. Will be no issue with crumbling or such.

Got the body apart again Preped the doors, fenders, deck lid and hood. Sprayed them today with the last coats of primer
Mike and I will seam seal some of the body this weekend then apply the last coats of primer to it. From there we start applying all the black paint to underside of body, fenders and hood as well as the firewall.
Still lots to do but feeling good.

Cruising along pretty good at this point. Got the eexterior of the car seam sealed (except the bottom) and last 3 coats of primer on the body last weekend.
Removed the body from frame today and put on the rotisserie. Moving on to prepping, seam sealing and painting the bottom of "Ole Betsy".

I did get it apart with out breaking any thing although it sure was built like it was not ment to come apart in my opinion. There are three small cables have lead ends like a bike brake cable. You have to pry the holder apart that they sit in. I will have to pinch them back together when reinstalling. Really the ony tricky part.

Scuffed bottom of car today. Welded up a few holes and did some bondo work to hide a few areas we worked on. Finished the day by priming the trunk area with epoxy.
Tomorrow I will seam seal the bottom.
