Head Bolt IS Different BECAUSE, a Head Bolt is torqued to a given condition by reacting against the head and its support structure.

So now you have cut away the support structure and you want to put a "push rod bronze sleeve" back in to seal up the hole but you think nothing about the loss of clamp load on the head gasket at that point on the head?

I have seen guys narrow the boss between the two runners on a normal cast iron Pontiac head and later they could not hold a head gasket. A cast iron head, not a softer aluminum head. Sorry but I think that you are missing the point here. It is not to seal up the oil leakage, etc, it is to be able to properly clamp down the head and have a head gasket hold under high boost pressures.

When I designed our billet RAV heads for the funny car, the very first design parameter was to define a 1/4" wall around all of the head bolts. NOTHING that was put in after that (ports, oil drains, etc) was allowed to violate that space. So far, the head gasket sealing is excellent even with the violence of nitro.

For an NA application, where cylinder pressure is lower and port flow is more critical, a thinner wall is the correct approach. Every design is a compromise to suit the specific use.

Hi Eric,

So what you’re saying is that on a boosted engine, this is not what you would have done? Got any of those billet V heads “with water jackets” or any suggestions to make my V heads work with with at least 25lb of boost?

Merry Christmas to all.

Ed

Our billet heads don't have any provision for water jackets.

I haven't seen your heads so I'm not really qualified to comment.

You're right, there should be a seat support bar. It wasn't installed yet.

... another alternative is to use a "Port Intruder" ... you machine out the head bolt area to a much larger size until it just machines into the floor/radius a small amount, machine a clearance hole on the bottom of the "Port Intruder" (solid aluminum round stock) to clear the shorter stud/nut under the "Port Intruder" ...

... then the ports can be CNC'd, or hand ported to size and the "Port Intruder" gets installed after the heads are installed, all the intruder does at that point is seal oil, and provide the interior shape of the two intake ports in that area, this is obviously a mod for a wedge layout ...

... well, i've only seen it done on a Wedge ...

Agree, A Port Intruder method of clamping down the head would work. A lot of extra machine time but the heads would probably stay sealed under boost. Typically requires a Big Hole though and the correct torque values for the shorter fastener.

Thanks, all the major welding is done only a few more bars to add. The cage should be back in the car sometime next week. Regarding the RA-V heads, I’ve had a few conversations with Tony over the last couple of weeks.

Happy New Year to all!

When you are doing a Boosted Engine you don't need a Boosted Engineer just the Internet and some "common sense"! Of course any help is better then no help.

Bypassing the internet advice and middlemen; and going directly to Tony sounds like the right approach. Good luck for 2013!

Nice thing about the internet, for some people, is they get to find people who agree with them on their theories, be they right or wrong.

Do you expect to be at the track this year?

Hope you sort out all the problems.

That’s the current plan, although that assumes the engine can get sorted out to my satisfaction.

That is going to be another one of those A$z entry first, deals where you put your legs inside the cage first, bend over, kiss your a$z, then sit down in the seat types of things. Good thing Drag Racing does not have a rule like the SCCA where you have to be able to exit the vehicle in so many seconds.
