Pulling a motor apart
I am picking up a OHC in OK today and bringing it back for a spare. I haven't pulled a motor in yeeaarss so I have a few questions.
I am taking the motor apart to go through it. I have a couple furniture dollies to lay the block/rotating assembly on and the head and cam tower/parts so I can move them in the garage. Should I number and keep head bolts or other parts in order? I plan keeping the head together at the moment. Any tips would be appreciated.

I use ziplock freezer bags and a sharpie to organize the bolts as I am removing them. You don't need to keep the bolts in order, put the followers, lifters and such MUST be kept in order. Put all of the parts for the Number 1 intake in a bag and label it as 1I and go on down the line with 1E,2I2e, etc.
Congrats on the score. |

First thing is to clean as much of the engine crud off of the parts as possible.
Then do a very good inspection of each part to see if it is usable in the new build. Then figure out what replacement items you need and where to get them from. Finally make a plan of whether the engine will be a stock rebuild or a upgrade to a higher HP level and what parts might need to be changed. Then you are on your way. Tom Vaught

Forgot to add.
What should I do/use to keep parts/cylinder bores from rusting?

How long are you going to store?
I coat parts with white lube spray if they are hard to coat by hand.

LPS 1 or WD-40 work good for preventing rust. If you are going to store the block long term, LPS 2 or LPS 3 are both good. The ultimate would be to use cosmoline, but it can be expensive AND hard to find. Just remember to number the connecting rods/caps and make sure they stay together. Same with the main caps.

I got my block machined in the middle of April 2012. I sprayed the block down, slipped a garbage bag over it, didn't seal it, rolled the engine stand into a garage without climate control in the South Louisiana humidity, and it still looks like the day it was machined, maybe better. Karl |
