Unhappy RIP Ron Hildreth

Was waiting for Bill Takanabe to post, but he doesn't frequent the board much.

Got an email from Bill T. that Ron Hildreth passed away this morning. I do not have any further details at this time. Please keep Ron, his wife Mel' and his family in your prayers.

Ron was one of the good guys in this hobby. He will be missed by all of us. I remember when I first met Ron like 20 years ago at Brotherhood Raceway. And for all of you who did not know. Ron was a proud Green Berret! Yes Ron was a real bad ass back in the day! And fought for our country not on one tour but several! And he was one hell of a driver! Rest in peace bro.

Ron's username here on PY was simply Ron, he posted mostly in the Race forum as he was heavily involved in drag racing his '65 GTO.

I had the pleasure of competing against him in the 'B' bracket in the Pontiac Drag Days race series from 1993 - 2002.

You will be missed Ron.

Ron was a great friend and was always a joy to be around. The Pontiac community lost a true gentleman. Rest in peace my friend. We all will miss you.

WOW !!!!!! I got the email from Bill this morning too. I first met Ron at LACR Los Angeles County Raceway in the early days of Pontiac Drag Days ( Early 90's). He was one of the guys that used to run the program. I raced with him there as well and would often see him and "Big Injun" Dave Anderson at the World Finals and Winternationals and we'd end up sitting together to watch the big guys race. I knew Ron had to give up racing recently but that's all I knew.
Now I feel really fortunate that I got to see him when I was out to SoCal last September for Route 66. A bunch of us got together at Flo's Cafe at the Chino Airport for some good ole biscuits n gravy. After breakfast Ron pulled up next to my 64 and gave me a care package that had a bunch of engine parts and front end trim. Just cuz. Pretty cool huh. I will truly miss your smilin face Mr. H.

Although Ron had been in bad health for some time, it is still a shock when the end comes. He was a good friend to both me and the rest of my family. I heard the news from a lot of different sources at about the same time. While already on the phone, my daughter called. She was crying like a baby. RIP Ron, and my condolences and best wishes to Melanie.

My story of meeting Ron for the first time will come later.

Ron is upper right in the picture (upper left is Les, Mr. Wheelspin). Picture was taken a few years ago while the group was at Pontiac Heaven and enjoying the hospitality of the Baumgardner's on Saturday night. Second pic is Ron's drag car being run at this years Pontiac Heaven. He couldn't race the car himself, but he found a driver and brought the car out anyway just to participate.

I was another one that raced with Ron starting back in the very early 90's along with Big Injun Dave, Ken Brewer, and a slew of other regulars. Ron was always kicked back and jovial - right up to last yellow lighting up. Then watch out because he usually snatched the win light away from you. For those of you that participated in the first POCI drag race that was held in SoCal, he was the one that took home all the marbles including King of the Hill.

This is a picture of Ron when Dave Anderson was driving the Tiger through the parking garage in Dallas. I think it was in 2002, and it was before he lost a significant amount of weight. Also one of him racing his street car at the same event. He used to go by GTO4Ron on the boards.

Arrow Memories of Ron...

Ron and Melanie are part of our inner circle of Pontiac friends and he was always a strong competitor in any endeavor that he engaged in, work or play.

My favorite memory of Ron was at LACR a couple of years before it forever closed in 2007. Ron was locked in competition with another Pontiac Drag days racer going into the final race and won the division for the year by ONE point. So what, you think; the track operator Bernie then announced that he had a surplus "Wally" trophy and presented it to Ron for winning the B bracket for the season . John Force has enuf of these to line the walls of his showroom, but how many of us bracket racers have one .

Looks like Ron tree'd me one more time, even in passing .
