Now that my '65 GTO clone is actually running, I would like to help it run well. It currently has a just-rebuilt '70 400 block (.030 over), '65 #77 heads from a 421HO and a stock '70 GTO intake. The previous owner told me the motor had a "290 comp cam." Judging by the idle, it has plenty of cam. I am also running an HEI.
Now the problem: previous owner installed an aftermarket 750cfm Holley mounted on a 1" adapter. When I look down inside the carb, all I see is intake manifold, and i imagine this is why I am not running very well and the thing spits gas out the tailpipes by the quart. So I am thinking about purchasing a rebuilt Q-jet (or Edelbrock?) for this street/strip motor. Function is very important, numbers and originality is not. I was hoping someone could recommend a good carb and maybe even somewhere to buy it. Or maybe I should keep the Holley and bolt on a new intake? Any opinions on this idea? Thanks for the help.

Go with the Q-Jet, best carb for your Pontiac.

Get a Q-jet reworked by Cliff Ruggles, he frequents this board and has a lot of satisfied customers here. Do NOT buy a rebuilt one from your local parts store, they are nearly always pretty hacked-up.
If you keep the Holley and buy a new intake it may run pretty well. But it won't get good mileage like a Q-jet that can easily run with the Holley.

I am leaning towards the Q-jet and I have contacted Cliff. Ultimately I will probably have him build be a custom Q-jet, but I don’t really want the car to sit for the 4 months it will take.
I have to think that the stock 70 iron intake is not allowing the motor to see its full potential, so maybe I need to swap that too. There are several used Edelbrock intakes out there which are inexpensive. Would a Performer, Performer RPM, or Torker be a good match? If I do swap intakes, that raises several of other questions: Would the Performer be a good match to my current Holley 3310? Will they work with my HEI? And will I have clearance issues with my stock Tempest hood? Thanks again for all the help.

The stock '70 intake is plenty stout performance-wise, it will easily feed your 400 with 389 heads. I used a stock '69 intake on a 455 with '71 HO heads (round-ports). This engine in my '64 GTO easily ran in the low 12s using this un-modified intake and a 750 Q-jet. The iron intake had no problems feeding a 455 with a healthy cam (244/[email protected]) and good-breathing heads on it.
If you want an aftermarket intake use the 'regular' Performer, it is the same height as a stock intake and fits HEI. It is a better match to your combo than the other intakes you mentioned. You can then use your current Holley on the Performer until Cliff can deliver your Q-jet, it will accept both carbs. The Performer is pretty much the performance equivalent of the stock '70 intake, those iron intakes are better than you think.

I just switched from a Torker to a 70 iron intake on my 71 GTO and what a difference. More responsive and pulls better through the midrange. The cam I'm currently running is a Lunati BMII with an 800 Spreadbore double pump Holley. If you have gas running out the tailpipes rebuild your Holley till you get your Q-jet from Cliff and remove the spacer. I think you'll see a difference.

Sorry about the long delay for rebuilding and custom carbs, nothing I can do about it. I've tried a couple of times to get help to speed up production with poor results. Finding help that will even show up is impossible, let alone someone with any decent work ethics...so...for now it's just me. Aside from the long turn around times at least I have full control of all production and testing.
B-Man, your carb is finished, will have the distributor done by the end of the week, got to take a couple of days off to take Steph back to College and help her get moved in.....Cliff

I installed it and it ran pretty well right away. I still get a little fuel out the tailpipes, but I have not had time to tweak the carb settings at all, or get the choke working properly, as the car has been in the paint shop for the last 6 weeks. But overall I am happy. I do still have two ready-to-run Holleys on the shelf if anyone is interested.

Bullheimer: believe it or not, Englishtown is almost 3 hours north of me. I have only made the trek once and it frankly was not worth the time in traffic, though I did get a killer deal on a complete nose for my '65.
Kyle_blake: I am positive that it is fuel, or at least mostly fuel from the smell, and corresponding garage floor stains.

Is the holley 3310 in rebuildable shape? I'd try a rebuilt kit. Just follow the instructions and ask questions on-line. Try to get a timing gun and see how much initial timing you have.
Make sure the floats are adjusted correctly, try turning out the mixture screws from bottom 2 1/2" turns CCW. Hopefully you can get it idle around 900 rpm with 16 degrees base timing. ( just a suggestion ) Oh and also leave vac advance disconnected while you check this issue out. Sounds like no fuel out the pipe and you'd be happy. Heck if money is tight take the holley apart and put it back together, at least you know the condition of it. The manuals are downloadble from holley. hope this helps

But since its back, raw gas out the tailpipes? I would'nt think it woud even run with that much gas going thru it.
