I was also wondering if anyone ever mounted one at the crossover or do they install 2 of them?

I have had my Race Readys for over 2 years with no problems on my 66 GTO. I would suggest getting the big ones. I have 3 1/2 collectors and went with 3 1/2 cutouts, they are load, people will tell them they have a 3 1/2 collector and get 3 inch cutout and they are not as load. Mark

I have a set showing up this week, 3" exhaust, 3" cutouts. I drive my car 12,000-16,000 miles a year, I'll know in short order I think if they are built to last. I'll have the EFI kick them open automatically at ~50% throttle or so.

I kinda like the the DMH brand. And the price. I would like to use the 3 inch since my collectors are 3 inch but i want to use 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 back to the mufflers.

DMH cutouts...
I installed a Pypes 3" X-change off of my Doug's headers, bolted the DMH cutouts on the open legs of the X-change, 3" mandrel bent pipe to the 3" muffs, and then adapted the 3" muffs exits to the 2 1/2" full length tailpipes on my GTO.

Mine showed up yesterday. Now if the friggin heads will show up this week I'll have it all installed this weekend. Same deal, 3" down pipes to 3" cutouts then reduced to 2.5" for the remainder of the exhaust.
(Yes I'm single, lol)

Not me, but a gentleman I correspond with installed a set of the Pypes cutouts on his GTO.....the plastic gears inside the actuatores melted in short order. He had a heck of a time getting satisfaction on that deal. FWIW....

Pypes cutout system is quite expensive, at least for me.

Goatman...I agree with the cost of the Pypes. Did you make a choice yet? I'm in the same situation (see my post today). Placing the cutouts (3") between the headers and reducing down to 2.5" before the crossover sounds great to me.

Summit brand looks to be the cheapest but there may be a reason they are cheapest.
I think i'm going to go with the DMH brand. 3 inch to 2-1/4,maybe 2-1/2. |

went with 3" DMH on my 68 firebird convertible. i had issues with them sealing almost immediately so when closed sounded like a pinhole exhaust leak which drove me nuts. The rubberish seal inside tore and I called Dave. he was aware of the problem and said he had a new design to fix it. Mailed them back in the off season. took a long time to get them back and he was VERy difficult to get a hold of.
But... he upgraded me to 3" oval cut outs which solved my ground clearacne issues and they seal great! No problems with 2 seasons of driving. I did a set up similar to the other pics with the x pipe. very tight on the vert. Wired my switch in place of the cig lighter with the cig lighter knob on it. Look slick. no holes in the dash. Man it sounds MEAN under bridges or against the Jersey barrier on the highway! |

The endurance test begins. FINALLY installed them. Wiring to be automatic is a bit more complicated than I first anticipated so for now I'm using the included switch.

WAAAAYYY cool!! Mine are working great still after 2 years. I will be curious to see how your are after 12k miles.
What brand did you buy? Are they wired to the EFI at 50% throttle? That may get old after as while for ya. I love opening mine up but after a few minutes, I also love closing them. If I could figure out how to post to You tube I would do the same as you. Gotta ask the kids I guess. I also wonder if the O2 sensor will read the condition as lean when you uncork them? Nice Job. |

They're pypes brand or which ever ones they sell. I could have a solid 8k on them by the end of the year. I'll be driving 500-600 miles next week to Salt Lake, then Drag Week is a minimum 4,600 miles in September. I might be driving to the Washington coast for a family reunion in August, which would be ~1,700 miles, but that's a maybe, and there will likely be at least one more trip to CA for Thanksgiving or Christmas for another 1,100-1,200 miles.
Currently they are not wired to the EFI. There are a couple challenges I didn't expect, namely that power cannot be continuously applied to them for fear of burning out the motors (which the instructions warn against), which the EFI will apply power for as long as the condition exist. So I've been looking at timer circuits or timed relays. Until then, I have the manual switch zipped tied to the shifter handle and can operate it with my hand resting on the shifter. I'll have it programmed for greater than 75% throttle for sure, which doesn't happen often on the street. Plus I'll probably wire in a switch for Auto/OFF for those times I really don't want them to open.
