Looking to see if anyone has done a carb conversion for 1962 tempest 195, I'm trying to find something to make my car a bit more reliable weather it be a different carburetor or a fuel injected system

It's a 1 barrel but I wouldn't mind doing a single or double conversion

Mechanickeith is your best source for reliability and tempests. He will chime in when he gets home I am sure.

I found this carb in a rod magazine. http://www.daytonaparts.com/
It looks promising for a standard 4 cyl Tempest engine, but I haven't run one so can not give a testimonial. A new carb goes a long way for making an old car run smoother and more reliable. Something to consider. |

That's exactly why I'm doing this, more reliability

I called them and I believe they said 250 or 350 for one that will bolt right in, it is Manuel choke though so you would have to add that

I have seen many NOS one barrel carbs for sale at swap meets, but most were listed for chevy six cylinders. Someone on the forum may know of an NOS interchangeable carb application that would be less money. Mechanic Keith rebuilds his old ones with good results.

Nothing wrong with the 1BC Rochester carbs. As with anything, it needs a proper rebuild & adjustment once back on the motor. My current carb needs rebuilt again. It has well over 60K on it. This time it needs major repairs. The throttle shaft & base are worn out. Wont idle down completeyl without tapping the gas pedal a couple of times. I am currently in the process of going through my parts looking for a good replacement carb base with good throttle shaft
I posted a rebuild thread some time back complete with pictures & text. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...ght=carburetor

I had a 1963 with the SD 4-barrel, which was entirely TOO LARGE for the street. Removed the SD 4-barrel and replaced it with a Carter AFB part number 9400s (400 CFM). The before and after were like driving two entirely different cars.
As far as reliability is concerned, while I feel the Rochester 2 barrel and 4 barrel carbs of this period are among the most reliable carbs ever built, sadly, cannot say the same for the 1 barrel (type B or BC). MAJOR design flaw that requires work every few years. The Chevrolet guys toss the Rochesters in favor of the Carter 1 barrel type YF. Jon.

Taking the above post a step further:
We have found that, as a general rule, when migrating an O.E. (original equipment) carburetor from one application to another, the donee engine should be within 3 percent (plus or minus 3 percent) of the donor engine. Just doing a quick search of our database, Carter produced YF carburetors for Chevrolet 194, Nash 195, and A.M.C. 196 CID engines. I have done no additional research on this, but would think that the Chevrolet linkage would be closer to Pontiac linkage than the Nash linkage. Other than my opinion (others may differ) that the YF is a MUCH better carburetor than the Rochester B; there is another benefit. The Carter YF uses the exact same metering jets as the AFB, so tuning parts are readily available. The only downside to the YF is that it uses a diaphragm type accelerator pump, which like neopreme plunger type accelerator pumps, is more problamatic than leather, especially for vehicles which are driven infrequently. The Chevrolet 235 owners that switch to YF's from the Rochester B report better driveability (especially the lack of a hesitation), better power, and significantly better fuel economy PLUS the absence of leaks. Food for thought. Jon.

I've been following this thread with some interest, and finally decided to look up what a Carter YF looks like. And now, having looked at a few for sale on eBay, I realize that in the massive pile of spare parts I got when I bought my '62, I have one.
Maybe I'll try it out. |
