See the Steve Kanuika advertising on the Jungle Jim car? Steve Kanuika's Speed Shop used to do a lot of sponsoring at Cecil County when I first started racing my Firebird in 1978. I won in F/SA and I was given a trophy and a tee shirt with his speed shop advertising on it. I wore that thing until it fell apart, It was my favorite.

All of these shots of old race cars made me think of this car from my old neighborhood. This shot is from 1981.
![]() This car was built and tuned just down the street from me, right next door to a good friend. Something about standing in a two car garage as the big block was fired up with open headers. Really makes an impression on a young boy. The fact that these guys would put with me and my buddy hanging around while they were trying to get the car ready for the next race was pretty cool. I thought so then and I think so even more so looking back at it now. This car even made the cover of Circle Track magazine in the mid-late '80s as it was one of the few Modifieds with IFS.

I have a very early 70's magazine that carried the same pictures. Not something you forget. The driver is probably looking to see if his feet are still there. |

Great contributions as always from Steve-thanks Steve!
Besides the car above, what I really like about '69 Firebird above, is it shows a real driver as most were back in the day. IMO the light rust or dirt road dust on the rear wheels, the slightly tweaked nose grill, custom paint, jacked up, tires & wheels, and paint accessories are how most we're treated and considered cool then. I like it. Rust was always something we had to constantly chase away from the cars, especially the drivers. Would love to find one exactly as shown above today! |

the pic ain't vintage, but the car sure is. this oakland won the antique street cruiser class at our local car show sat. it has a smog 400 in it i think. a couple of years back, he told a friend of mine it had a '73 455HO--that sent up red flags, especially since my friend had a '71 455HO in his '69 bird at the time. further inspection revealed what i believe he said were 4x d-ports. oh well, no matter--its a neat lookin ride anyhow!
a '39 pontiac won this class last year--can we claim 2 in a row??

Had a '67 2+2 on my list of possibilities when during my recent search for a second car.

I don't believe I've ever seen a '62 with a vinyl top before that one. Interesting.

I was rough on engines, and it sat in the driveway between engines a couple times. It has aluminum slots on it in this picture, and I reworked both quarter panels, hence the primer. I think this picture is 1979 or maybe 1980.

Yes, my brother drove that Gia for years. The year before a girl rear-ended his 1969 beetle, and totaled-it, because it cracked the engine, even though the body damage was minimal. My sister had a 1976 super beetle, and it always broke the throttle cable. I never did buy into that VW thing.
