Excellent! I gave up the tars one year and two months ago. Wish it was sooner, but I've never felt better. Took up walking also, Put in 6 miles a day at the local rec center and that's enough to keep the fat away.

Congtrats on taking control! You are a better man for it!

Congratulations. Something that you may want to try as an incentive to continue quitting is to take the money that you would have used for those habits and put it in a jar. After a year or so take that money and buy something tangible that you want like some new wheels or something. Every time that you look at those wheels you will remember how that came to being.

I quit smoking 30+ years ago and bought myself a state of the art camera. I've never looked back and view as a milestone in my life. Something that was a millstone.

Congrats you have done what all smokers should do. A word of warning though. Don't ever think it will be ok to have just one cig. It took me a few tries but eventually I succeeded.

Good going, just think about all the money you saved in addition to your health! When I quit smoking, cigs where 80 cents a pack, I can't imagine what they cost today.

One thing I noticed was the attitude change from doctors and medical folks since I quit smoking. When smoking I could tell they didn't have as much concern as they did after I
quit. I ask an older nurse about it and she told me..."if at your age, with all the information
that's been out there for years, if you don't care about your health why should we".

Lots of truth in that, I noticed the same. I quit smoking 14 years ago, always seem to get positive attitudes from medical professionals when they ask about my history.

Congrats Randy. I recall a thread you started maybe a couple of years ago when you revealed that you were drinking a LOT of beer....like a couple of cases a day.
While quitting smoking is getting a lot attention here....and it deserves it.... and as the son of an alcoholic Father who died at age 41, I want to congratulate you on putting the alcohol behind you too. Quitting both together makes you a Rock Star in my book. Not many can do it.

So you were 135 lbs prior to quitting? Ask your Dr. What your ideal weight, body mass should be for your continued long term health.

Congrats. Having long ago kicked the smoking habit I can share that the craving can/will pop-up when you least expect it. Don't be surprised or let it bother you...nicotine and the additives scientifically designed to keep you hooked are strong and deeply ingrained. I quit cold turkey years ago and now can smell any faint wisp of smoke outside (such as neighbor two doors down) and by now perhaps you have regained your sense of taste and can taste and smell food again. Great enjoyment with dining can be regained.

Suggest you exercise caution using any over the counter or prescribed meds with side effects are listed as ANY Liver problems due to your long term ingesting of massive quantitys of alcohol to limit current potential of liver disease.

Surely at least once or more every week, or day, you may realize how much better you feel and glad you kicked the habits. Keep up the good work.

cuz, do you notice a common warning here? Don't let your guard down! I once quit for 3 years and after a great "roll in the sack" my wife lit up. I figured that it wouldn't hurt anything so I lit up. Within a week I was back to 1 1/2 packs a day. Three or four years later I quit again and that was 30+ years ago. I'm sure that if I lit up just one more time I would be back at it. Don't let your guard down!

Just caught this thread....habits are tough to quit....all good advice here. I been fortunate never smoked or drank....

The smoking really gets magnified when you look at used cars with ashtrays overloaded with butts and radio knobs that have turned yellow...makes one think what does it do to your lungs?

take care I am sure your Doctor can do the math and figure out how many years you have added to your life above the ground based on when you stopped and your current age....not to mention food tastes better now.
