How do you remove the evaporator core from a 1965 Pontiac GTO? Is it removed from under the dash inside, or from under the hood? Any help appreciated.
I am actually checking for leaks using soapy water and 100 pounds of air pressure on the low side. I have drenched the under hood side including the compressor and condensor and found no air bubbles, so I am assuming it's going to be a evap issue or a connection at the evap core. Thanks in advance. |

I would suggest making absolutely sure that it is the evaporator that is leaking before you try to remove it. It is a fairly intensive job to do it.
Professional shops use a "sniffer" (detector) to isolate leaks. Maybe you will get lucky and find that your leak is somewhere else. |

Since I posted this, I used a sniffer and it appears to be the evap. Do you or anyone here have the written procedures for replacing the evap core in a 65 Tempest/GTO?

At the very least you will have to pull the inner fender but if you remove the complete fender, it will be so much easier to work on.

It's mounted to the firewall from the engine compartment side. I couldn't imagine doing it without removing the hood and right inner and outer fender. Start there, then you have full access.

I have used a "sealer" with good luck. I don't recollect the name, but it was $65 for a little can. That might be worth a last ditch attempt before undertaking this onerous task.

Also, 100 psi pressure is a bit much to pressure test. Normally, 50 psi is used. Another trick is to use a smoke tester, which generates smoke into the system and will exit through the leak. VERY easy to detect system leaks this way.

Hard to pressure up smoke to 50 psi, let alone 100 psi.Not sure how this would be done.
You can as suggested, pressure the core to 100 psi which is the pressure a fully charge system has when it is not running . When the system runs, the low side dips to around 30-40 and the high to around 225-250 . Plug one end, Hook up one end to an air supply and dunk it like a tire...in a tub of water, or spray it with soapy water and look for bubbles. Slow leaks will make real tiny bubbles. Smoke machine is very good for checking airflow leaks in your ductwork as it is safe, leaves no odor and is easy to spot. Ductwork needs to be sealed tight , especially in the underhood evap case as loss of airflow is a complete step backward. |
