My 76 Anniversary GP has "buckskin" interior. I am replacing and painting the plastic cover for the dimmer/cruise control switch on the steering column, which has a darker color that the seats. I have looked at the interior color spray cans from Ame's performance. Does anyone know which would be the best matching color? I am guessing the "VDM36 Saddle" is the one I need, but I am not sure. Any advice?

The 1976 Ditzler descriptions for the buckskin (64H) interior calls the steering column jacket paint "Dark Saddle", UTIColor UCV number: 2-217, DIA Ditzler Code: 23942.

Rinshed-Mason on the other hand, calls the same paint "Saddle" , Fisher Code: W25A4131, R-M Code: A-4559.

Ames has three interior "Saddle" colors: "Light Saddle" (VDM35), "Saddle" (VDM36), and "Dark Saddle" (VDM42).

Which of Ame's colors is the correct one here?

OK, after checking the color chart in Performance Year's catalog for vinyl paints I believe the matching paint color for the steering column jacket should be "Saddle".

If you have the paint code, take it to the local paint supplyer. Most can mix it up and put it in a spray can for you. Last time I got one it was $20 for a big can.

SEM paints is the way to go, they are the best out there for plastic, vinyl, and flexible coatings. They have cross references for all OE (GM, Ford, Mopar) interior colors, though you might need to go to a dealer to physically view the chips.

You need to properly clean the surface, and use a promoter, both of which SEM has.

Saddle, Camel, Buckskin, and other 'tan' interiors vary in shade, and I would be skeptical of other manufacturer's cross references. If you want proof, take a look at those colors of interiors at the next car cruise or show, and note the shade differences between areas where folks have tried to touch it up.

I've seen shade vary between cans on the same color from the same manufacturer.
